  Description

  Area of marsh and rock outcrop. Locally said to be site of burial ground. No visible surface trace of burials. • CO147-013 Mine - copper
  Description

  In blanket bog, on W slopes Ballyrisode Hill, c. 200m N of main Schull-Goleen road. Isolated mine working; discovered 1854 by landowner Richard Hungerford; investigation of mine interior uncovered stone mining mauls and cache of twelve polished stone axes (Caulfield 1880, 341-2). Near-horizontal working driven 62 into low W-facing outcrop; interior flooded. Overall length 3.5m; entrance (Wth 3.8m; H 1.8m); interior (Wth1.8m; H 1m). Smooth concave wall rock profile typical of fire-set workings. Outside entrance, spoil mound (13m E-W; 7m N-S), with narrow antiquarian trench (L 13.5m; Wth 1.2m; D 1m); no spoil exposed. (O'Brien 1987) A charcoal sample from this mine was radiocarbon dated to 3400±30 BP (O'Brien 2000, 21-2). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.   Description

  On shoulder (now forested) between two ridges of outcropping rock, on SE side Knockaphuca mountain. Badly damaged; comprised gallery (L c. 5m; Wth 0.8m) aligned ESE-WNW. Possible to distinguish outer walling and number of buttress stones to N and S of gallery. Three displaced roofstones partly cover E half. No clear indication or cairn or mound.   Description

  Reported and investigated 1971; earlier report c. 1938 (UCC). Four earth-cut chambers, joined by creepways, and arranged in a cruciform plan. Entrance shaft (L 4m) from surface to chamber 1. Dimensions: Chambers 1, 2 and 3 (c. L 2m; Wth 1.5m; H 0.8m). Present access through collapsed roof chamber 4 which is much disturbed. Burial ground (CO147-015002-) c. 100m to E. (Twohig 1973, 36-9).   Description

  Overlooking Ballydivlin Bay to W. Subrectangular, slightly raised area (H 0.5m; 22m E-W; 34.5m N-S); depicted as rectangular area on OS 6-inch map (1842), roughly circular area on 1902 map. Numerous grave markers noted. Said locally that famine victims buried here and in two mounds close by to SE. Excavated souterrain (CO147-015001) nearby to W.   Description

  On mid-foreshore at low water on S side of Ballyrisode beach/strand (inner beach) to immediate SE of carpark; site would cover at mid to high water. Eroded and well buried, so difficult to assess nature and extent. 2 upright slabs at slight angles to each other facing seaward and may have been a third stone but is now collapsed; 1m to south 3 long slabs enclosing a rectangular box-like stone setting; enclosed on 3 sides and open on side facing seaward.   Situated on rocky ground at c. 70m OD; formerly rough grazing land with scattered stunted conifers from a felled plantation. On a moderate E-facing slope c. 100m NNE of a wedge tomb (CO147-014001-). Isolated boulder (2.2m x 1.2m; H 1.2m), partly supported, clear of ground surface.   Description

  Detached L-plan three-bay two-storey house with gables to each bay, built c.1890, having recessed central bay with balcony. Canted bay window and two-bay single-storey wing with dormers to east. Recent lean-to conservatory to west. Pitched artificial slate roofs with diamond-profile rendered chimneystacks, cast-iron and uPVC rainwater goods and carved timber bargeboards. Hipped roof to canted bay. Painted smooth rendered walls with blind openings to dormers. Square-headed openings with timber fixed pane and casement windows, concrete sills and label mouldings. Pointed arch openings to north elevation with concrete sills and replacement timber windows. Square-headed openings to canted bay having fixed pane and casement windows with concrete sills. Square-headed door opening to front, with timber glazed double leaf doors. Square-headed door openings to east and west with timber matchboard doors. Rubble stone boundary walls with wrought-iron gate.
