Description
Cropmark in tillage (AP: Dr D.D.C. Pochin Mould), shows bivallate circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. - CO073-095002 Enclosure
Description
A linear cropmark showing three sides of a possible rectangular enclosure (min. c. 40m NW-SE; c. 20m NE-SW) is visible in an aerial photograph (AP: Dr D.D.C. Pochin Mould) taken in July 1989. The SE side of the enclosure is truncated by the townland boundary and the field to the S of this boundary is built on. A bivallate circular enclosure (CO073-095001-) lies immediately to the N. The EMC factory constructed in Barangore in the 1990s was built on the site of the enclosures (Lane 2000b, 2). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
- CO073-102 Enclosure
Description
The cropmark of a small univallate circular enclosure is visible in an aerial photograph (AP: Dr D.D.C. Pochin Mould) taken in July 1989. A phase of the EMC factory was unknowingly constructed on this possible enclosure in the 1990s (Lane 2000b, 2). Two other enclosures (CO073-095001-, CO073-095002-) c. 90m to the SE were also built upon. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
- CO073-118 Excavation - miscellaneous
Description
During archaeological monitoring of topsoil in advance of the construction of the N22 Ballincollig Bypass, a sub-oval pit (0.78m x 0.3m; D 0.37m) was discovered. It contained some stone objects, including two pieces of flint debitage, and over 200 sherds of Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age pottery which represents a minimum of seven Beaker vessels and not more than ten. A radiocarbon date of 2480-2050 BC obtained from charcoal in the pit concurs with the dating evidence provided by the pottery. Though there was no cremated bone present, the apparently deliberate placement of the objects found within the pit seems to rule against it being a refuse pit. A pit-burial (CO073-124----) with similar features is located 100m to the NE. (Danaher 2004a, 59-60; 2005a) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
- CO073-119 Excavation - miscellaneous
Description
Following archaeological testing and monitoring on the N22 Ballincollig Bypass, a linear pit (1.15m NE-SW x 0.33m; D 0.14) was excavated in 2002. It was found to contain a single charcoal-stained deposit of a loose silty clay which yielded 22 sherds of medieval pottery. The excavator (Danaher 2005, 10) suggested that it may have been a refuse pit. (Danaher 2004a, 59; 2005a, 10) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
