  In pasture, on break in N-facing slope. Circular area (16.8m N-S; 19.2m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.4m), stone faced externally. Gap in bank to ESE (Wth 2.8m).   Description

  Large 19th century slate quarry adjacent to Clonakilty-Skibbereen road. Chimney (H c. 9m) atop ridge, square stone base (Wth 2.45m; H 4m); upper portion circular in plan with brick top. Further structural remains in vicinity of chimney. Part of cast iron wheel (diam. 3.05m) on roadside to SW.   Description

  Rectangular tower (int. 6.8m E-W; int. 5m N-S) at W end rock ridge, in valley bottom to N of stream. Country house (Castle Salem) built against E side of tower. House L-shaped in plan with large square stacks atop end gables; stack on N wall projects from wall at first floor level (in the fashion of 17th century houses like Reenadisert Court (CO105-020001-); it would seem that this is the core of house built in latter part of 17th century by Morris family; interior modernised; also probably of this period terraced garden to SE of house. Quaker burial ground to E of house (CO134-037---). Surrounding farmbuildings of 19th century appearance; on outside of N wall of farmyard pair of kiln recesses (H 1.8m; Wth 2m); partially blocked; probably for lime burning. Modified as part of later house. Originally entered by doors in E wall at ground (now blocked) and 1st floor levels; latter door now gives access to landing of house. Mural passage in E wall with spiral stairs at SE corner; garderobe chamber at NE corner; and door through to main chamber to W. Similar arrangement at 2nd floor level with access from spiral stairs. Main chamber at 2nd floor level has fireplace in N wall. Window embrasures square-set with segmental vaulted heads; single ogee-headed lights in W wall at 1st and 2nd floor levels. Spiral stairs blocked before 3rd floor level. Tower now covered by gabled roof of slate added when upper storeys removed (Donovan 1979, 213). Castle of MacCarthy Riabhach which, according to Annals of Four Masters, was built by Catherine MacCarthy Riabhach (nee FitzGerald) who died in 1560 (O Murchadha 1985, 54).   Description

  In tillage, beside road just N of entrance to Benduff Castle (Castle Salem) (CO134-036001-). Quaker burial ground identified by D-shaped island of untilled land, at E side of field, with large tree at centre; on N side of tree simple rectangular tomb of William Morris; according to local tradition the erection of this tomb so distressed the Quakers that no further burials took place.   Description

  Freestanding circular-profile rubble stone and red brick chimneystack, built c.1860, now disused. Set upon square base. Tapering shaft with oversailing red brick string courses to upper red brick stage. Ruinous remains of associated building to east. Set within disused slate quarry.

• Office, 1800–1840 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1820, now derelict. Pitched slate roof having slate hanging chimneystacks, rendered eaves course and gable copings. Slate hanging walls with sections of exposed render. Square-headed window openings with stone sills throughout having remains of six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed door opening to front (south) elevation with four-pane overlight and timber frame. Set within own grounds along roadside. Enclosed by recent chain-link fence.

• Benduff Castle, castle/fortified house, 1660–1700 · National interest
  Description

  Detached L-plan five-bay two-storey house, built c.1680, remodelled c.1780. Incorporating three-stage sixteenth century tower house to rear (west). Now also in use as guest house. Pitched slate roofs with rendered and dressed stone eaves courses, rendered and rubble stone chimneystacks and uPVC rainwater goods. Single-pitch slate roof to lean-to having stone eaves course. Rendered walls to front elevations, rubble stone walls elsewhere having sections of render throughout. Square-headed window openings with stone and rendered sills throughout, having six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows. Single eight-over-eight pane timber sliding sash window to front elevation. Four-over-four pane timber sliding sash window to side (north) elevation. Some uPVC and replacement timber casement windows to lean-to and side (north) elevation of return. Square-headed door opening to front elevation within recent timber doorcase, having glazed timber door with overlight. Recent pitched slate roof to tower house, having rubble limestone walls with quoins. Lancets with limestone sills and surrounds to front (west) elevation, later square-headed window openings elsewhere having recent timber framed windows. Square-headed door opening to front elevation having rendered reveals and recent glazed timber door, approached via rubble limestone steps with recently rendered surface. Two-storey outbuilding to east of site, having pitched slate roof, rendered walls and square-headed openings with timber battened fittings. Door to side (south) elevation approached via rendered steps. Four-bay single-storey with dormer attic extension to east gable. Located within own grounds, having splayed entrance to roadside, comprising roughcast rendered walls and square-profile gate piers, with chamfered rendered caps and double-leaf cast-iron gates.
