  Description

  On W bank Four Mile Water river, in Durrus. Rectangular roofless single storey structure (int. 10m N-S; 6.75m E-W); much disturbed. Turbine recently removed from original position on E wall, now lying nearby. Fed by concrete launder. French Burr runner millstones (diam. 1.34m) inside mill. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). Architectural heritage

• St. James' Church, church/chapel, 1790–1795 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding Church of Ireland church, built 1792, rebuilt 1799, having three-bay nave, single-bay chancel, three-stage bell tower, built 1832, and four-bay secondary nave to south, built 1867. Later vestry to north-east, built 1940. Pitched slate roofs, having dressed coping and cross finial to 1867 nave, with uPVC rainwater goods. Ashlar crenulated parapet and corner pinnacles to tower. Rendered, coursed and rubble stone walls, with red brick string course to 1867 nave, and buttresses to north elevation and 1867 nave. Single, double and triple pointed arch, ogee-headed, multifoil and oculus openings with fixed pane and lattice stained glass windows having stone sills, timber tracery, rendered surrounds, chamfered stone reveals and weather guards. Pointed arch openings to tower having lattice windows and louvers with concrete sills and hood moulding. Round-headed door opening with timber battened door and label moulding. Round-headed door opening to vestry with timber battened door and concrete steps. Interior has freestanding altar at east. Set within graveyard with rubble stone boundary walls and wrought iron gates.

• Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, church/chapel, 1900–1905 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding gable-fronted double-height Roman Catholic church, built 1900, comprising seven-bay nave with flanking aisles and porches (east and west) and sacristy (west). Recent extensions to rear (north). Pitched slate and artificial slate roofs with bellcote, cross finials, metal cresting, eaves course, moulded corbels, concrete coping and uPVC rainwater goods. Snecked limestone and sandstone walls with string courses, blind trefoil niches, plinth and buttresses. Statue over main entrance (south), set on corbel and with canopy above. Single and triple pointed arch, round-headed, cruciform, trefoil, quatrefoil and multifoil openings with stained glass fixed and casement windows, stone sills, block-and-start sandstone surrounds. Hood mouldings to trefoil openings. Ogee-headed door opening to south elevation with double-leaf timber battened door, Carved limestone surround, steps and hood moulding. Shouldered door openings to porches with single timber battened doors, concrete steps, block-and-start surrounds and carved tympanums above. Camber-headed opening to rear with timber battened door. Arcades to interior, comprising pointed arches with granite columns dividing nave and side aisles. Open truss roof. Freestanding altar (north) and carved timber gallery (south). Enclosed by stone walls, concrete coping and hedgerows.
