  Description

  Marked on 1842 OS 6-inch map as 'Bishop's Tower (in ruins)'. Square, two-storey structure (4.6m N-S; 4.6m E-W) with crenellated parapet. Door in W elevation surmounted by niche for plaque; windows in both floors; fireplace in SE corner of ground floor. Building popularly ascribed to Bishop Brinkley (1826-1835) and thought to have been used as an observatory. Fleming (1896, 128) thinks it was built by Bishop Bennett as a 'tea tower' for social gathering. Stone plaque inscribed 'WC 1807' in farmyard of Cloyne house (CO088-01910-) said to come from tower. • CO088-019009 House - fortified house
  Description

  Near E end of Cloyne, on S side of Rock Street; now forming NW corner of garden wall around Cloyne House (CO088-01910-). Rectangular structure (20.7m N-S; 18.15m E-W): N end-wall along street, reduced to one storey; W side-wall stands to two storeys, top ivy-clad; only very short returns of S and E walls survive. Interior area covered by overground scatter of rubble. Four window lights on external W face: rectangular openings (H 0.85m; Wth 0.35m) chamfered on outer edge; inside light embrasures blocked; two at ground floor level and two, slightly off-set, at 1st floor level. Also on W face, at ground floor level near NW corner, two small oval openings set vertically forming opening for gun loop; embrasure blocked. Remains of late 16th/early 17th century appearance. Fleming (1903b) notes at least three castles in Cloyne, none of which can be identified with present structure.   Description

  At E edge of Cloyne, on S side of Rock Street; adjacent to Cathedral graveyard on W side. Present house restored servant's wing of early 18th century house; 4-bay, 2-storey block with extension to N and square block to SW; all with hipped roofs and of 19th century appearance. Site of Bishop's palace of Cloyne. Plaque with initials IEG (John FitzEdmundFitzGerald) and date 1578, set into wall of square block, probably commemorates house built here by FitzGerald when he took possession of See demesne (Fleming 1903b). A new house was built here by Bishop Crowe in 1718, this was known as "The Manse House"; in 1836 the house was leased as a private residence, when apparently 'the old part of the palace' was taken down (Lewis 1837, vol. 1, 381). According to local information the house was destroyed by fire in 1887, only surviving portion short section of wall on N side of present house. Hexagonal gate lodge, of late 18th century appearance, by street entrance to N. At NW corner of grounds shell of fortified house (CO088-01909-).
