Description
On edge of plateau, overlooking Blackwater River valley to S. Rectangular area (c. 27m N-S; c. 37m E-W) enclosed by curtain walls (max. H 3.8m), with circular flanking tower at each corner; tower at NE corner almost completely destroyed. Recent farm buildings abut NE corner of bawn; open slurry pit immediately outside full length of N curtain wall; farm buildings within bawn on N side; range of decaying lean-to buildings along inside of E wall. Corner towers three storeys high with internal diameters ranging 5m-5.6m; gun loops (int. Wth 0.74m, H 0.58m; ext. Wth 0.05m, H 0.10m) in each, on all levels, facing in all directions; joist sockets overhead indicate location of wooden floors. Towers entered from within bawn; drawbar socket in NW tower indicates ground-floor door; E ingoing of 1st-floor door survives in SE tower, where vertical recess indicates location of wooden door-frame. Double-splayed, lintelled windows on 1st floor of SW tower, with recesses for wooden frames. Two gun loops survive near S end of E curtain wall; S ingoing of gun loop near N end of W curtain, with inserted doorway immediately to N. Original entrance to bawn probably near S end of W wall, where section of wall (L c. 8m) has collapsed. Castle of the Mac Donogh MacCarthys (Ó Murchadha 1985, 63). Smith (1750, vol. 1, 294) noted that there had been 'an high square tower in the centre,...lately demolished'.
