Description
In pasture, on SW-facing slope, overlooking Allow River valley. Circular area (58.5m N-S; 55.6m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 1.3m. ext. H 1.35m) with external fosse (D 1m). Bank incorporated into field fence system W->N; break to NE (Wth 4.3m) and ESE (Wth 2m); cattle gaps to SW and W. Interior surface uneven; terraced to compensate for hill slope. According to Bowman (1934, 626), remains of church site (CO015-01502-) in interior. Second ringfort (CO015-01503-) c. 20m to SSE. Description
Bowman (1934, 626) recorded grass-covered mounds in ringfort (12488) as the remains of a church; 'Cillin Chronain - Saint Cronan's little church...in the sub-division of Cnoc a theampaill and is responsible for the parish name' (Knocktemple). No visible surface trace of mounds or church. Church in Knocktemple was in ruins in 1615 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 297). Description
In pasture, on W-facing slope. Circular area (diam c. 25m) enclosed by earthen bank (H 0.8m) NW->SSW; scarp elsewhere; external fosse (D 0.7m). Gap (Wth 1.1m) in bank to E. Interior heavily overgrown; possible souterrain (CO015-01504-) in NE quadrant. Linear fosse-like feature (L c. 25m; Wth 10-12m; D 1.5m) c. 2m beyond enclosure to S, may be due to quarrying; heavily overgrown. Ringfort (CO015-01501-) lies c. 20m to NNW in same field. Description
Road bridge (Wth 7.5m; long axis NE-SW) over Allow River, to SW of Freemount. Coursed ashlar sandstone construction with limestone detail. Two large elliptical arches (span c. 8-10m), projecting course over the arch rings; linear band course above arch. Bluntly pointed cutwater on both sides. Vertical stone coping on parapet wall which overhangs on external sides. Piered abutments at either end of parapet wall with limestone caps; caps have central hole.
