  Description

  On N and S banks of Bandon river, walled town created in early decades of 17th century under the patronage of Richard Boyle, Earl of Cork. The town today is largely of 19th-century character; apart from Christ Church (3344) no buildings of 17th century survive; however, sections of town wall can still be traced. No remains of wall on N side of river apart from short section to rear of house on E side of North Main Street and possibly the core of the N boundary wall to graveyard at Christ Church. South of river are more extensive remains: two runs of E wall (for 22m and 11.5m) between St. Patrick's Hill and Casement Road; most of S wall replaced by later wall on same line but probable original section (L c. 20m) on steps up to Catholic Church from Market Street; another stretch (L 24.3m) along E side of Church Street; E, S and W boundary wall of St Peter's Church (3351) on line of wall and batter at base of S wall may be original feature; best preserved sections are two lengths of W wall as it approaches river to N: running due S from river bank 18m stretch (wall thickness 2.75m) to 5.5m gap, then 70m stretch (wall thickness 3.5m) running in SW direction; the wall itself is low (H c. 1m) with narrow walls (H c. 1.5m; thickness c. 0.45m) along inner and outer edge forming narrow walkway. No defensive features are preserved and no trace of town's gates (CO110-019002-).   On elevated site in graveyard on W side of Bandon. St. Peter's church built 1849 on site of church built 1614 with assistance from Sir Richard Boyle (O'Flanagan 1988, 10). Cruciformed church (long axis E-W) with aisles;chancel extended. Pinnacled tower on N wall. Many 18th and 19th century monuments within. Limestone waterfont in use dated 1719. Sub-rectangular graveyard enclosed by retaining stone wall (max. ext. H 4.5m); wall to S incorporates part of town wall (3321); wall to E along line of town wall. Graveyard extended to W. • Bandon Bridge, bridge, 1770–1775 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding five-span road bridge, dated 1773, enlarged 1838, spanning the Bandon River. Splayed arch to southern end of west elevation. Camber-arches increasing in width towards central arch, having alternating raised tooled stone voussoirs, rubble stone soffits springing from tooled limestone block piers with V-cutwaters to east and west elevations. Limestone block and pyramidal render capping to west elevation cutwaters. Dressed limestone walls and spandrels surmounted by tooled limestone cornice and dressed limestone parapets with tooled limestone coping stones. Raised central piers with street lamp to parapets, having tooled stone commemorative plaques to interior walls. Tooled limestone terminal pier to northern end of western parapet. Rubble stone abutments with later rubble stone arched buttress to northern end of west elevation having alternating raised rusticated limestone block voussoirs and rubble stone spandrels surmounted by stone block cornice and low rubble stone parapet wall with convex tooled stone coping. Recent concrete girder bridge perpendicular to south end of side (east) elevation.

  Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, installed c.1890, comprising of moulded pedestal supporting fluted shaft. Banded neck with spout and recent brass tap surmounted by fluted cap with acorn finial. Mounted on rendered plinth block.

  Semi-detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1820, having projecting bow-fronted end-bays to front (south-west), two-bay three-storey block to rear (north-east) and single-bay three-storey projecting gable-fronted end-bay to side (north-west). Recent single-bay single-storey extension to side (north-west) of bow-fronted end bay. Hipped slate roofs having rendered eaves course, chimneystack, rooflights and cast-iron rainwater goods. Pitched slate roof to gable-fronted addition and uPVC rainwater goods to single-storey addition. Roughcast rendered walls to front and side (south-east) elevations having render plinth and platbands. Render sill bands to first floors of front, side (south-east) elevations and second floor of side (south-east) elevation. Rendered walls to side (north-west and south-west) elevations of three-storey block and projecting gable-fronted end bays. Exposed rubble stone wall to side (north-east) elevation of projecting gable-fronted end bay. Bowed camber-headed window openings with tooled limestone sills to front elevation, having raised render surrounds, tripartite timber framed windows with central-six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows flanked by two-over-two pane timber sliding sash sidelights. Camber-headed windows with tooled stone sills to front and side (south-east) elevations, having raised render surrounds and six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to front elevation and replacement uPVC casement windows elsewhere. Square-headed window openings with tooled stone sills to side elevations, having raised render surrounds to side (south-east) elevation, render sills to side (north-west) elevation and uPVC casement windows. Round-headed door opening to front elevation with diminishing render surround, tooled limestone step with cast-iron boot scrape, timber panelled door with masked brass door knocker and spoked fanlight. Pointed segmental-headed door opening with rendered surrounds and double-leaf glazed timber doors to front elevation of single-storey addition. Freestanding garage and walled garden to north-west. Rubble stone enclosing walls with recent ashlar concrete block piers supporting single and double-leaf timber battened gates to south-east.

  Semi-detached two-bay three-storey house, built c.1820, having seven-bay single-storey extension to side (north-east), built c.1930. Now also in use as medical centre. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks, eaves course, cast-iron rainwater goods and rooflights. Pitched slate roofs with carved timber bargeboards and uPVC rainwater goods to extension. Roughcast-rendered walls to front (south-east) and side (north-east) elevations with render sill bands to first and second floors front elevation. Exposed rubble stone walls with dressed stone quoins to rear (north-west) elevation. Rendered walls to extension. Camber-headed window opening with render sill to ground floor front elevation, having raised render surround, timber-framed tripartite window with six-over-six pane timber sliding sash window flanked by two-over-two pane timber sliding sash sidelights. Diminishing square-headed window openings with tooled limestone sills to front elevation, having replacement six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed window openings to rear elevation with tooled limestone sills, having dressed stone voussoirs and three-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed window openings with render sills and uPVC casement windows to extension. Round-headed door opening to front elevation having exposed stone voussoirs and pilasters, timber doorcase comprising fluted pilasters, timber panelled reveals, carved timber architrave and timber panelled door surmounted by decorative spoked fanlight with carved timber archivolt. Lined-and-ruled rendered walls with rendered plinth to front and side (north-west) elevations. Rendered walls to rear extension. Square-headed window openings with render sills and replacement uPVC casement windows throughout. Raised render surrounds to extension openings. Square-headed door openings to front elevation, having timber battened door with decorative cast-iron fittings. Square-headed door opening to extension having uPVC door. Splayed entrance to south comprising rendered walls with plinth and cornice surmounted by rendered coping. Pitched slate roofs with central valley, having hipped and half hipped slate roofs to projecting bay to front elevation and canted bay to side (west) elevation. Rendered chimneystacks, decorative ceramic ridge tiles with finials, carved timber bargeboards to gables and cast-iron rainwater goods. Coursed dressed rubble stone walls with tooled limestone quoins and plinth course. Rendered walls to side (south, east) elevations side extensions. Camber-headed window openings with tooled limestone sills throughout, having tooled limestone voussoirs and internal timber panelled shutters. Limestone stepped approach to recessed timber doorcase with timber panelled door flanked by multiple-pane sidelights surmounted by overlight. Square-headed door opening to side (east) elevation of extension having red brick block-and-start surrounds with recent render lintel and surrounds. Stepped approach with replacement glazed timber door. Enclosed courtyard to side (east) having concrete paving with outbuilding to eastern range. Decorative tooled limestone octagonal baptismal font to garden now in use as planter. Set within own grounds with gardens with mature tree-lined avenue having roughly dressed stone block piers with rendered capping and double-leaf wrought-iron gates. Rubble stone enclosing walls having splayed entrance with alcove to north of site with wall-mounted cast-iron letter box.

Roughcast rendered walls with rendered plinth and platband to ground floor of front (north-east) and side (north-west) elevations. Diminishing square-headed window openings with render sills and surrounds throughout, having one-over-two pane timber sliding sash window to rear elevation and first floor of front elevation. Two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows to ground floor of front elevation. Tripartite timber-framed windows to front elevation, having two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows to ground floor and one-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows to first floor.
