Description
In rough grazing on E-facing slope. Circular area (11.15m N-S; 10.55m E-W ) enclosed by fosse (D 0.6m) with external earthen bank (H 0.8m). Entrance (Wth 2.55m) with causeway across fosse at E. Interior level, with central stone-lined cist (1.6m E-W; 0.7m N-S). The E end-stone and the capstone of the cist are missing. Description
In pasture, 20m NW of early ecclesiastical enclosure (CO147-006002-). Well now encased in concrete; no longer in holy use. Known as 'Toberairin Broin (St. Brone's well)'. (O'Donoghue 1986, 5). Description
In rough grazing on W side of valley running N from Goleen, on break in SE-facing slope. Oval area (50m N-S; 40m E-W) enclosed by stone-faced scarp N-S (H 1.7m); stone bank S->SW and NW->N (H 1.2m); inner stone-faced rise SW->W; earthen stone bank W->NW (H 1m). Break in enclosure to N, SW and W. Kilbrown church (CO147-006005-) in NE quadrant. At centre, remains of hut site (CO147-006003-); roughly circular area (8m N-S; 7.4m E-W) cut into up slope on E side and raised on downslope, stone faced; arc of rough stone bank to N and S. Bullaun stone (CO147-006004-) immediately N of hut site. Holy well (CO147-006001-) lies 20m to NW of enclosure. Description
This hut site is referred to in the 'Archaeological Inventory of Co. Cork - vol. 1 West' (1992, 272) under the entry (no. 2572) for an ecclesiastical enclosure (CO147-006002-). The reference to the hut site in the entry reads as follows: 'At centre, remains of hut site (CO147-006003-); roughly circular area (8m N-S; 7.4m E-W) cut into up slope on E side and raised on downslope, stone faced; arc of rough stone bank to N and S.'
