  In pasture, on gentle S-facing slope. Depicted as hachured bank (C c. 35m) NW->SE on 1905 and 1937 OS 6-inch maps. Arc visible as upstanding bank in aerial photograph (GSIAP, R527, July 1975) and as cropmark of two wide banks separated by intervening fosse in second aerial photograph (CASAP). • Castle View, outbuilding, 1800–1820 · Regional interest
  Description

  Complex of outbuildings to Castle View, built c. 1810. Main building is L-plan multiple-bay two-storey north block set around north and west sides of courtyard, having pitched and hipped slate roof with dressed limestone eaves course and chimneystack, coursed rubble limestone walls, openings with brick voussoirs, camber-arched to windows and doorways, with limestone sills to windows, and with segmental-arched and round-arched carriage arch entrances. Courtyard entered through segmental-arched entrance in boundary wall and flanked by camber-arched pedestrian entrance. Lower multiple-bay two-storey building attached to east end of main block, outside courtyard, with rubble limestone walls and pitched slate roof with limestone chimneystack. Single-storey building to east with rendered walls and pitched corrugated-iron roof. Other single and two-storey buildings with remains of pitched slate roofs and having coursed rubble limestone walls with square-headed window openings with brick dressings and limestone sills. Two-storey building to east of courtyard has external steps. Roughcast rendered piers and coursed rubble limestone boundary walls to entrance, having render copings and decorative wrought-iron vehicular and pedestrian gates.

  Description

  Detached seven-bay two-storey house, built c. 1810, having slightly lower four-bay two-storey house of c.1770 at right angles to rear. Formerly temporarily in use as army officers' accommodation. Hipped slate roof with some cast-iron rainwater goods and limestone chimneystacks with clay chimneypots. Pitched slate roof to extension, having cut limestone chimneystacks. Painted roughcast rendered walls to main block and partially rendered coursed rubble limestone walls to older. Camber-headed window openings to main block, having six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows and painted limestone sills. Square-headed timber sliding sash windows to older block, with double four-over-four pane windows to first floor and eight-over-eight pane to ground floor, brick retaining arches, limestone sills and cast-iron railings to ground floor windows. Elliptical-headed door opening to later house, having timber panelled double-leaf door with elaborate cobweb fanlight, flanked by engaged timber columns and having limestone step. Square-headed door opening to older house, having timber battened door, brick retaining arch and limestone step.

  Semi-detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1880, with gabled porch and gabled dormer window. Built as part of group of fourteen labourers' cottages. Pitched slate roof with cast-iron rainwater goods and rendered chimneystack. Pitched slate roofs with timber bargeboards, and having decorative timber brackets to porch roof. Painted roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed window openings with one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows, painted limestone sills and painted render surrounds. Square-headed door opening with timber battened door. Outbuilding to site having square-headed window opening with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash window and square-headed door opening with timber battened door. Roughcast rendered piers to site with cast-metal farm gate.

Built as part of group of fourteen labourers' cottages. Pitched artificial slate roof with cast-iron rainwater goods and rendered chimneystacks. Pitched slate roofs to porch and dormer window, with timber bargeboards. Pitched slate and corrugated-iron roof to extension. Painted roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed window openings having two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows with painted limestone sills and painted render surrounds. Square-headed tripartite arrangement of four-pane timber casement windows to extension. Square-headed door openings with timber battened doors to entrance and extension. Roughcast rendered piers to site with cast-metal farm gate. Outbuildings to site.
