• CO071-049 Castle - tower house
  Description

  On E bank of Sullane river, just S of Macroom bridge (CO071-048----), within Macroom town. Castle itself, a multi-period 3-storey rectangular structure, demolished c. 1967, when a technical school was erected in its place. Smith (1750, vol. 1, 179-80) described the castle of consisting of 'two square towers about 60 feet high, with a large modern building between them'; this was converted, in early 19th century, into 'an elegant modern mansion' (Lewis 1837, vol. 2, 328). Probably contemporary with this latter conversion is embattled facade, of neo-Tudor appearance, along the riverbank; part of this facade is tall square tower of 19th-century appearance (access to interior not gained by survey). Facing town square to E is embattled gateway to demesne, also of 19th-century appearance. Area between river-side facade and gateway mostly occupied by disused garage; part of its street frontage includes stone door surround with shouldered arch, possibly of 17th-century date. Castle of Mac Carthy clan, apparently 'repaired and beautified by Teigue McCarthy, who died in 1565' (Lewis ibid.). Burnt a number of times in 17th century (Healy 1988, 60-1); the restored house was burnt in 1922 (ibid.) and remained a ruin until demolished. Armorial plaque, from above the front door, now in Macroom Museum. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.   Remains of country house, extant 1837, including five-bay two-storey wing centred on single-bay full-height gabled breakfront; single-bay three-stage tower (north) on a square plan. Burnt, 1922. Demolished, 1967. Now in ruins. Set overlooking Sullane River.

  Description

  Attached single-bay two-storey former house, built c.1820, now in use as shop and garage. Pitched corrugated-iron roof with cast-iron and replacement aluminium rainwater goods. Rendered walls. Square-headed window opening with render sill to first floor, having fixed timber window. Shopfront comprising tripartite square-headed display window opening with render sill to ground floor. Square-headed door opening with timber battened door and overlight. Located within yard, having rendered walls with segmental-headed carriage arch and shouldered square-headed pedestrian entrances. Raised render and timber lettering to arch over carriage arch. Cast-iron petrol pumps to front of site dating c.1960 and c.1980. Set back from street with rubble stone boundary wall to north of site.

  Attached four-bay two-storey house, built c.1820. Pitched corrugated-iron roof with rendered chimneystack and cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered walls. Square-headed window openings with render sills, having one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows to ground floor, timber casement window to eastern bay and replacement timber-framed windows to first floor. Square-headed door openings with glazed timber door with overlight. Set back from street within yard.

  Description

  Freestanding three-bay two- and three-storey gate house, extant 1824, on a symmetrical plan with single-bay three-stage turrets on circular plans. Roof not visible behind parapet. Repointed rubble stone walls including sections of rough cut slate surface finish with corbelled stepped stringcourses supporting battlemented parapets having concrete coping. Tudor-headed central carriageway with repointed voussoirs centred on keystone. Pair of pointed-arch window openings (first floor) with concealed dressings framing timber fittings. Set back from line of street on a corner site with cobbled forecourt.

  Description

  Attached five-bay three-storey bank, built c.1900, with three-bay porch to front (east). Hipped slate roof with rendered overhanging eaves on timber corbels, having roughcast rendered chimneystack and cast-iron rainwater goods. Flat roof to porch. Roughcast rendered walls with render quoins having channelled render to ground floor of main block and porch. Square-headed window openings with render sills and moulded render surrounds throughout, having uPVC casement windows. Round-headed window opening with render sill and surround to side (north) elevation of porch, having uPVC casement window. Square-headed door opening to porch, having rendered surround and keystone with timber panelled door and overlight. Round-headed door opening to side (south) elevation of main block with raised render reveal, timber panelled door and overlight. Tooled chamfered limestone plinth with cast-iron railings to front site having cast-iron gate piers and double-leaf pedestrian gates.
