  Description

  Abandoned 2-storey structure in Massytown, Macroom, named 'Corn Mill' on 1842 OS 6-inch map. According to local information built by Waltons in 1750, whose family later built oat mill (CO071-049002-). Rectangular structure (24m N-S; 6m E-W) with lower 2-storey grain-drying kiln added to N and 2-storey residential block added to E, making T-shaped ground plan. Wheel-pit (Wth 1.7m) within now houses a small inward flowing turbine fed by narrow pipe from mill pond (dry) to W. Tail race arch in E elevation. Turbine powered two pairs of millstones at 1st floor via belt and pulley system. Two wooden H-support frames for millstone on ground floor; western spindle and 1st floor stones gone, eastern spindle to 1st-floor bedstone in position with wooden hopper and long shoe. Sandstone runner millstone leans against wall on 1st floor and another lies in yard to SW. Secondary line shaft with series of pulley wheels hang from 1st-floor ceiling transmitted power to Harrison McGregor metal grinder and pair of encased millstones with iron hopper, both on ground floor. Other mill features include weighing scales, enclosed wooden elevators and separator. Grain-drying kiln has central brick-lined furnace on ground floor, 1st floor of stone slabs resting on wooden beams with ceramic grain drying kiln tiles above.   Description

  Roadside in Massytown, Macroom. According to owner oat mill built in 1832 onto earlier carding, mill by Walton family who came from nearby flour mill (CO071-047001-). Rectangular carding mill (19.1m N-S; 12.2m E-W) used now as corn store. Oat mill built onto W side of carding mill, indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map as 'Flour Mill', with mill race flowing along N wall and through middle of carding mill. By 1904 OS 6-inch map mill race realigned to present layout: approaches from Sullane River c. 1.5km to SW (recently damaged by road works); fills mill pond immediately to N of mill; head race runs into mill at W end of N wall to fill internal wheel-pit housing Craig Francis Turbine brought from Crossmaglen in 1956. Mill burnt in early 1920s and refitted with present mill machinery. Two pairs of millstones, for shelling and grinding, rest on low iron table over cogged gearing which is powered by belt and pulley system from turbine, now mainly driven by electricity due to lack of water. Enclosed 1930s flour mill in NW corner used only during World War II. Upper stories contain cleaning machinery. Grain transferred through mill via elevators. Still in use as oat mill.   Description

  Detached L-plan double-pile multiple-bay five-storey mill, built c.1830. Having single-storey extension and canopied loading area to rear (west). Pitched corrugated-iron roofs with cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with cast-iron bracing plates to front (east) elevation. Square-headed window and loading bay openings with render sills throughout, having timber battened fittings. Timber casement windows to rear elevation. Square-headed door openings with timber battened doors, having concrete stepped approach to raised opening to rear elevation. Located on roadside.
