• CO016-140 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In rough grazing land, broken by marshy ground, on E-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; arc formed by low rise (int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.3m; Wth 6m) survives W->NNE; bank levelled elsewhere and appears to be pushed outwards to E and S giving the site overall dimensions of 22m N-S and 20m E-W. Interior slopes down to E; flat-topped mound (diam. c. 3.3m; H 0.2m) in N half of interior. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 379) as levelled single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 25yd) on C. O'Reilly's land; site c. 2ft higher than surrounding field. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.   Description

  This is one of four 'dallans' (CO016-242----, CO016-244----, CO016-245----) recorded by Bowman (2000, 181) in 'Mr. O'Reilly's' in Mahanagh townland. Bowman (ibid.) describes this stone as '(b) 30 yards [27.43m] west of (a) [CO016-242----]. 9" [0.23m] over ground, 6' 7" [2m] girth'. The location of this stone was pointed out by the present landowner. The stone was removed from this location in recent times. It may be one of two stones now lying in the SE corner of the field.   Description

  This is one of four 'dallans' (CO016-242----, CO016-243----, CO016-245----) recorded by Bowman (2000, 181) in 'Mr. O'Reilly's' in Mahanagh townland. Bowman (ibid.) describes this stone as '(c) 500 yards [457m] (c). South of (a). 2' [0.6m] high, 13' 3" [4.03m] in girth'. The location of this stone was pointed out by the present landowner. The stone was removed from this location in recent times. It may be one of two stones now lying in the SE corner of the field.   Description

  This is one of four 'dallans' (CO016-242----, CO016-243----, CO016-244----) recorded by Bowman (2000, 181) in 'Mr. O'Reilly's' in Mahanagh townland. Bowman (ibid.) describes this stone as '(d) about 400 yards [366m] west of (a). 3' [0.91m] high. 11' 2" [3.4m] in girth.'. The location of this stone was pointed out by the present landowner. The stone was removed from this location in recent times. It may be a stone that now lies near the N boundary of this field.   Description

  In marshy pasture. Kidney-shaped mound (11.2m N-S; 7.4m E-W; H 0.65m) containing very dark soil; opening (Wth 5m) faces W. Cattletrack cuts across N end of mound. Probably one of two fulachta fiadh (11418) recorded by Bowman (1934, 379) on Mr O'Reilly's land. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. • CO016-248 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In marshy ground, atop hillock. Depicted as small irregular-shaped field (c. 45m E-W; c. 45m N-S) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Roughly circular slightly raised area (34m N-S), adjoining field fence to S, defined by low scarp with shallow fosse (D 0.22m) NE->SSE; very slight scarp, much interfered with, SSW->NNW. Interior bisected by modern drain running N-S; flat-bottomed pit (D 0.7m; Wth at top 1m; Wth at bottom 0.4m), containing charcoal, visible in E-facing section. Locally known as fort. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 379) as single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 65yd) on C. O' Reilly's land, with two-thirds of rampart levelled and remainder c. 6ft high forming field boundary.
