• CO093-033 Standing stone
  Description

  In level pasture. Sub-rectangular stone aligned NE-SW (H 2.7m; 1.6m x 0.5m). See Excavations 2001, 50-5. • CO093-033001 Cremation pit
  Description

  In level pasture. The ground where a displaced standing stone (vol. 1, no. 455) formerly stood was archaeologically excavated, prior to the reinstatement of the stone. A large subcircular pit (0.99m x 0.73m) was uncovered immediately W of, though stratigraphically later than, the standing stone socket. The pit contained a stake-hole and was filled with black, charcoal-enriched sandy silt containing numerous fire-reddened medium-sized stones and cremated human bone on the southern side. A setting of 4 irregularly shaped large stones sealed the bone, on top of which was deposited a layer of sandy silt with pebbles, small stones and charcoal. The sides and base of the pit were slightly oxidised, indicating it was subjected to heat prior to the insertion of the cremated remains. The excavation also uncovered two other, less substantial pits (CO093-033002-), neither of which contained cremated bone. • CO093-033002 Excavation - miscellaneous
  Description

  Two pits were revealed during excavations undertaken in 2001 prior to the reinstatement of a displaced standing stone (CO093-033----). The smaller of the pits (diam. 0.15m; D 0.70m) was subcircular in plan and was cut through the redeposited boulder clay. The fill was a brown sandy silt containing occasional small charcoal flecks and pebbles. The larger pit (0.25m x 0.31m; D 0.16m) was situated c. 0.12m to the S and was roughly oval in plan with the N and E sides sloping gradually to an uneven base (Wth 0.11m). The fill was a loose, dark-brown to black, silty sediment containing occasional charcoal and pebbles. The pit cut into redeposited boulder clay and also into the N side of the backfilled socket for the standing stone. The excavation also uncovered a cremation pit (CO093-033001-).   Description

  In pasture, on break in S-facing slope. Circular raised area (30m N-S; 32m E-W) enclosed by scarp (H 2m) with low internal lip (H 0.3m); outer bank of dump stone construction NE->ESE (H 1.4m); stone-faced scarp with slight internal lip ESE->WNW; field fence elsewhere. Berm or shallow fosse (Wth 6m) between banks. Entrance to SE cuts both banks (Wth 2m). Cultivation ridges cross interior on E-W axis.   Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built 1932, with recent lean-to extension to rear (west). Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Painted rendered walls. Square-headed openings with two-over-two timber sliding sash windows and concrete sills. Square-headed opening with timber battened door, overlight and concrete step. Outbuildings to side (north) and rear (west). Enclosed by rubble stone and rendered walls.
