  In pasture, on gentle E-facing slope. Circular slightly raised area (26m N-S; 24m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.7m; ext. H 1.7m) NE->NNW; scarp (H 1m) elsewhere. Bank low and denuded, with many stones exposed. External fosse survives to SW and W as slight depression. Causewayed entrance (Wth 2m) to SSW. Ringfort (CO018-049---) lies c. 28m to SE.   In pasture, on gentle E-facing slope. Depicted on 1842 OS 6-inch map as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m); as hachured arc depicting scarp ENE->SW on 1905 and 1936 OS 6-inch maps. Circular area (30m N-S; 30m E-W) enclosed by low rise (max. H 0.6m). Break in bank to E (Wth 4m) and W (Wth 4.5m) with slight causeway. Low rise in NW quadrant of interior. Circular enclosure visible as shadow site of bank, with possible second bank NE->S, in aerial photograph (CASAP). Ringfort (CO018-048---) lies c. 28m to NW.   In tillage, on gentle SW-facing slope. Depicted on 1842, 1905 and 1936 OS 6-inch maps as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m). According to local information, levelled c. 1979. Low rise remains, indicating line of bank. Circular enclosure visible as soilmark of bank in aerial photograph (CASAP, taken in 1985); and as bivallate circular enclosure visible as cropmark of fosses in aerial photograph (CASAP July 1984).   Description

  Vacant one storey structure on NW side of road, c. 1km S of Kildorrery. Indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map as T-shaped structure (long axis N-S with central projection to E) named 'Old R.C. Chapel'. Indicated on 1903 OS 6-inch map as School (long axis E-W) in Scart settlement with central projection to S. Rectangular one-storey structure. Gable-ended with brick chimneys atop gables and one in centre. Entrance front (S) of 7 bays, with slightly off-centre broad 2-bay gabled projection, bearing date plaque which reads 'Scart National School 1847'. Rear elevation of 10 bays. Large playground, with outside toilet blocks in dividing wall to rear. Building now vacant. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.   Description

  Terraced two-bay two-storey house, built c. 1890, with disused render shopfront to ground floor. Pitched artificial slate roof with rendered chiimneystacks and cast-iron water goods. Painted rendered walls. Square-headed window openings to first floor with moulded render surrounds and one-over-one pane sliding timber sash windows with painted sills. Segmental-headed door opening to ground floor serving house, with moulded render surround and glazed timber panelled door with overlight. Shopfront has fluted pilasters, fluted scrolled brackets, raised lettering to fascia, moulded cornice, and timber panelled door with moulded architrave and overlight.

  Description

  Semi-detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1880, as pair with adjoining building to east, having timber shopfront to ground floor, and flat roof two-storey and single-storey extensions to rear. Pitched artificial slate roof with rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Painted rendered walls with decorative render quoins. Square-headed window openings to first floor with moulded render surrounds with decotive devices to top corners, and one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Shopfront comprises chamfered pilasters with fluted scrolled console brackets having decorative rounded tops and supporting dentillated and bracketed moulded cornice. Remains of decorative cast-iron cresting to ends of cornice. Pairs of tripartite display windows with elliptical-headed lights divided by carved colonnettes, flankingly square-headed doorway with double-leaf timber panelled door. Timber fascia with painted lettering 'CASTLE GALE HOUSE'. Two-storey outbuilding in yard to rear, having pitched slate roof and stone walls.

  Attached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1880, as part of pair with adjoining building to west, and formerly also in use as shop. Pitched artificial slate roof having rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Painted rendered walls with render quoins having ornamental motifs. Square-headed window openings with render moulded surrounds having decorative devices to top corners, and one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed opening to ground floor with carved timber panelled door, set into render doorcase comprising fluted pilasters, fluted scrolled brackets, moulded archivolt, and boarded overlight. Square-headed recent door opening to centre having replacement door and overlight.

  Attached three-bay two-storey former house, built c. 1830, formerly part of terrace and now in use as offices. Pitched corrugated-iron roof having rendered chimneystacks, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Painted rendered walls. Square-headed openings, those to first floor being smaller and having timber casement windows, and those to ground being timber sliding sash windows, one being two-over-two pane and other being double one-over-one pane. Square-headed door opening having timber panelled door with chamfer detail and overlight.

Painted rendered walls with rusticated render quoins. Square-headed window openings with one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows, double to ground floor, with painted sills. Square-headed door opening with carved timber panelled door, decorative overlight, and limestone threshold. Wrought-iron gate to east side giving access to yard at rear.

  Description

  Freestanding cruciform gable-fronted church, built c. 1840, north-facing, with three-bay side elevations to nave, shallow chancel to south with recent lower sacristy addition wrapping around chancel projection, embattled flat-roof porch, and external staircases to north elevations of transepts accessing galleries and having doorways also to under part of staircases. Pitched artificial slate roof with tile cresting at intervals along ridge, cut-stone bellcote with cross finial over gable-front, metal cross finials to other gables, and castellations to porch. Painted smooth rendered walls with render quoins, render detail to verges of gable-front, and rendered diagonal buttresses topped with cut limestone pinnacles. Pointed arch window openings throughout with block-and-start render surrounds and hood-mouldings, stone sills and painted timber Y-tracery windows. Round window opening to south wall of chancel having recent stained glass. Pointed arch main entrance doorway with render hood-moulding and timber battened double-leaf doors with wrought-iron ornamental strap hinges. Pointed arch main entrance doorway and external gallery doorways, and Tudor arch doorways to under parts of staircases, with double-leaf timber battened doors, render hood-mouldings, and having pointed arch holy water stoups to one side of each doorway. Ornamental strap hinges to ground floor doors, and divided overlights to Tudor arch doorways and to gallery doorways. Pointed arch statue niches to upper part of gable-front flanking central window. Interior has carved timber gallery to transepts and over entrance end of nave, supported on reeded columns. Stucco rosettes to ceiling of nave. Carved marble altar, backdrop and altar rails, with ornate brass gates to centre of rails. Statues in decorative pointed arch surrounds to crossing. Timber screen inside entrance has double-leaf doors with stained-glass sidelights and overlights. Cut limestone boundary wall with cast-iron railings, panelled piers and cast-iron vehicular and pedestrian gates. Church renovated in 1980s.

  Description

  Detached T-plan one-storey former national school, dated 1847, with seven-bay front elevation having two-bay gable-fronted projection added c. 1870, and nine-bay rear elevation. Now converted to private dwelling. Pitched slate roof with brick chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Exposed rubble limestone walls to front elevation and roughcast rendered walls elsewhere. Square-headed window openings with stone sills and six-over-six pane sliding sash windows, those to front having brick dressings, stone voussoirs of one earlier opening visible. Brick-arch square-headed openings with stone sills to projection having nine-pane timber windows, upper part being bottom-hung casement. Square-headed door openings in each side of projection having replacement timber doors. Name and date plaque on projection reads ' Scart National School 1847'. Divided playground with former outside toilets to rear.
