  Description

  Went (1946, 140) records site of pilchard press at Scilly in Kinsale. No visible surface trace. 1842 OS 6-inch map shows two parallel rectangular structures (long axes NE-SW) in area known locally as "the palace"; ruined residential structure may be remains of these. Immediately to SW, ruined rectangular 2-storey, 11-bay structure (long axis N-S) to SW, date plaque inscribed "1840", is known locally as "fish factory". The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994).   Detached eleven-bay two-storey former fish processing building, c.1820, with flat-roofed extension to rear (east). Now in use as house. Hipped slate roof with rendered chimneystacks, uPVC rainwater goods and recent rooflights. Lime rendered rubble stone walls with tooled stone plaque to front (west) elevation. Square-headed window openings with stone sills and recessed reveals. Replacement six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows throughout. Tripartite timber-framed window to extension having six-over-six pane timber sliding sash window flanked by two two-over-two timber sliding sash sidelights. Camber-headed balcony openings to gable (north) elevation having recent half-height glass walls. Square-headed door opening to front elevation with raised render surround, double-leaf timber panelled door and stone step. Square-headed door opening to side (south) elevation with replacement timber battened door. Recently rebuilt single-bay garage to south-east on site of earlier structure. Rubble-stone quay wall with integrated graving dock to west and slipways to north and south.

  Detached five-bay two-storey with dormer attic house, built c.1860, with recent glazed timber porch to front (south) elevation with original front door to interior. Comprising L-plan block, having stairwell block to rear (north), extension and enclosed yard area to north-east. Hipped and pitched slate roofs to main block, single pitch roof to extension and recent rooflights to workshop. Rendered chimneystacks including central pair and cast-iron rainwater goods throughout. Smooth rendered wall to front with roughcast rendered walls elsewhere. Camber-headed window openings to front and side (west) elevations having stone sills. Raised moulded render surrounds and consoles to front elevation openings. Nine-over-six pane replacement timber sliding sash windows to ground floor and six-over-six pane replacement timber sliding sash windows to first floor. Square-headed window opening to rear extension having stone sill and six-over-six pane timber sliding sash window. Round-headed window opening to stairwell block with stone sill, having nine-over-six pane timber sliding sash window with spoked fanlight to upper sash. Square-headed window openings to workshop block with render sills and replacement timber casement windows. Bipartite timber-framed window to west elevation of workshop with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed door openings. Raised render surround and timber-panelled reveal to front door opening having double-leaf glazed timber doors. Two-bay two-storey workshop outbuildings to east. Recent double-leaf timber-battened doors to front elevation of workshop (south), glazed timber door to rear with stepped approach. Recent timber battened door to enclosed yard (north). Dressed limestone retaining wall and steps to water to front with gate openings to north and east. Double-leaf cast-iron gates to east and double-leaf timber battened gates to north.

  End-of-terrace two-bay two-storey house with three-storey elevation to rear (south-east), built c.1800. Recent conservatories to rear. Pitched slate roof with red brick chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered wall to front (north-west) elevation with slate hanging to side (south-west) and rear. Square-headed window openings with stone sills and raised render surrounds to front elevation openings. Six-over-three pane timber sliding sash windows to first floor, six-over-six pane timber sliding sash window to ground floor. Replacement timber casement windows to side and rear elevations. Square-headed door opening to front elevation having raised render surround. Timber panelled door and quarry glazed overlight with recent pitched timber canopy.
