Description
Discovered on the S side of a stream during topsoil removal along the route of the Ballincollig-Ballineen gas pipeline and excavated in 2000. It was completely contained within the pipeline corridor. A truncated irregular spread (4.8m E-W; 2.75m N-S; D 0.23m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil with a well-defined opening (Wth 1.2m) facing N towards the stream. Though excavation did not reveal any evidence of a trough, the excavator suggests that the trough may have been destroyed during previous agricultural land reclamation works (Tobin 2001). (Tobin 2002b, 52) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
