- DG055-003 Standing stone
Description
There is no trace of the 'Standing Stone' marked on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map. Situated on a low rise in good land generally falling to SE. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
- DG055-011 Ringfort - unclassified
Description
There is no sign of the 'Fort' marked on the 1st and 2nd editions of the OS 6-inch maps. It was situated on a small hillock in excellent land with good views.
- DG055-030 Cist
Description
This cist was uncovered during ploughing in 2000 or 2001 and investigated by Halpin and Roche on behalf of the NMI, in 2003. Rectangular short cist (int. dims. 0.85m N-S; 0.625m E-W; D 0.51m) whose sides were defined princiaplly by four main slabs set on edge A number of small slabs were also laid horizontally over the N and S ends to raise the height to that of the long sides. There were three possible shallow cup-marks on the S end stone. The floor of the cist was paved with a number of small slate slabs and sloped from south to north. The cist had originally been sealed by a single subrectangular capstone (dims. 1.11m x 86m; T 0.1m). The contents of the cist had been seriously disturbed upon discovery and much of the fill of the cist proved, on excavation, to have been redeposited. Sherds of four bipartite vessels was uncovered. A substantial part of cremations deposits survived, scattered over most of the floor of the cist, apart from the N end and SW and SE corners. Analysis of the cremated bones reveal the presence of 11 individuals: at least five adults, including two males and one female; at least two juveniles under 7 years old; an infant aged 7-11 months; a neotate and two foetuses, probably under 5 months 'in utero'. The cremated bone yielded a date of c. 2195 to 1768 BC. (Cahill and Sikora 2011, Vol. 1, 98-111). Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 12 February 2013
- DG055-031 Fulacht fia
Description
The proposed development would involve the construction of 34 houses and include the construction of roadways and footpaths, connection of foul and storm drainage to the existing public drainage system, provision of services, landscaping of open area space and paths and all ancillary site works. The proposed development area measures 24,824m2. The excavation of fourteen test-trenches throughout the proposed development area revealed the presence of a previously unidentified spread of burnt stone in the eastern end of the proposed land-take. The method statement submitted for the testing suggested that this general area, due to its low-lying and slightly waterlogged nature, had the potential to contain previously unrecorded fulachta fiadh. A spread of burnt stone was identified in Trench 9 and three additional trenches, Trenches 9b, 9c and 9d, were excavated to help define its extent, character and condition. Testing suggests that the feature measures c. 13m east–west by 12m and continues to the ditch, which forms the eastern boundary of the proposed development area, and which is also a townland and parish boundary. Limited hand investigation showed the stone spread to have a probable depth of c. 0.15m. Excavation of the remainder of the trenches failed to reveal either archaeological features or artefacts. The burnt spread was preserved in situ under a geotextile layer, which was gradually sealed by broken stone to a height of c. 1.3m. Monitoring of topsoil-stripping across the whole of the site failed to reveal archaeological features or artefacts (Bennett 2010, 79). The NGR given in Excavations 2007 plots the monument in the adjoining townland of Altaghaderry rather than Kildrum Upper as stated in the excavation report.
