Architectural heritage

• Ards House, outbuilding, 1850–1870 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached eight-bay two-storey U-plan outbuilding, built c.1860, with central enclosed courtyard, having three-bay two-storey wing to northwest and six-bay two-storey wing to southeast, and with two-bay single-storey over basement addition to southeast. Hipped slate roof with cast-iron rainwater goods throughout. Roughcast rendered walls to courtyard, and coursed sandstone rubble walls to northeast, northwest and southeast. Rubble walls to southeast addition. Three-centred integral carriage arch to left-hand-side of southwest elevation, with raised block-and-start surround, segmental arch to centre with raised chamfered stone surround, and chamfered red brick surround to northeast elevation. Pointed segmental-headed window openings with stone sills and replacement timber casement windows. Segmental-headed doorways with raised chamfered stone surrounds. Oculus vent openings to first floor, with rendered cut-stone surrounds to courtyard and half-dressed voussoirs to northeast. Series of segmental-headed integral arches to courtyard elevations of northwest and southeast wings. Set in overgrown woodland, with friary and church to northeast and road to northwest.

• Ards House, walled garden, 1860–1880 · Regional interest
  Description

  Rectangular-plan walled garden, built c.1870, associated with Ards House (demolished). Now overgrown and disused. Rubble sandstone walls with slate course and field-stone coping. Segmental relieving arch to northwest and flat-arch pedestrian entrances to northwest and northeast, with timber battened double-leaf doors and remains of cast ironmongery. Raised corner with large quoins at southwest. Set along road, with grass verge to northwest and overgrown mature gardens and woodland surrounding.

• Ards House, steward's house, 1870–1890 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey T-plan former steward's house with attic, built c.1880, having porch to front re-entrant corner (southeast) and projecting gables to south and east. Pitched slate roof with overhanging eaves, decorative clay ridge tiles, red brick chimneystack and replacement rainwater goods. Decorative exposed timber bargeboards to projecting gables, supported on decorative timber trusses on stepped corbels. Catslide slate roof to porch with overhanging eaves supported on decorative trusses on stepped corbels. Roughcast painted walls with raised smooth-rendered quoins. Camber-arch openings with raised chamfered render bands, painted stone sills and replacement windows, and with replacement timber panelled and glazed door. House set on rising ground, with surrounding lawn and freestanding metal posts and gate to front.

• Ards House, church/chapel, 1960–1970 · Regional interest
  Description

  Attached gable-fronted friary church, built c.1965, having eight-bay nave, gable-front having three-bay single-storey porch and two-stage steeple, and single-storey sacristy to northeast. Pitched concrete tiled roof with overhanging eaves, replacement rainwater goods, octagonal lead steeple with cross finial and sprocketed eaves to upper level. Flat roof to porch with centred gablet and rendered coping; mono-pitch concrete tiled roof to sacristy. Rusticated concrete walls. Pointed-arch openings to nave with concrete surrounds and sills, having four-pane stained-glass units inset with concrete profiled mullions and transoms. Segmental-headed window opening to southwest gable with concrete surround and sill and vertical multiple-pane stained-glass window inset with concrete profiled transoms. Pointed-arch doorway to porch with moulded concrete surround and timber battened double-leaf door. Interior has convex-arch roof with exposed beams and panelled plastered ceiling with ocular insets, exposed columns flanking window openings, painted walls, altar to northeast and confessional to southwest flanking porch. Convex-arch opening leading into friary at southeast. Car park to front and gardens to southwest.
