The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). - DG029-051 Rock art
Description
Situated on S facing slope of rising ground in mountainous region within a field system (DG029-052) and several hut sites to the SE, S and E. A single hut site (DG029-056) is located 130m to the W, two hut sites (DG029-057001/002-) are located 57m to the SW, and two house sites (DG029-053/054) are 120m to the SE. Top of rock outcrop (dims. 0.66m x 2.55m) carved with at least 10 shallow oval and circular cup marks ranging in size from 4cm to 12cm. 8 lines can be seen criss-crossing the surface of the rock some of which are natural and others appear to be carved.
- DG029-052 Field system
Description
Situated on SW facing slope of Bawnloge Hill in rough mountainous pasture with good views of valley below from E through S to W and higher land to N and NE. A large complex of grass-covered field walls [Wall T 0.6m; H 0.3m) runnning from E-W and N-S across the SW facing slope of Bawnloge Hill forming several fields with the remains of hut sites (DG029-056/057001/057002-) and houses (DG029-053/054) inside some of these small fields. Some of these grass covered field walls appear to be indicated on the 1838 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and appear to be contemporaneous with the hut sites and house sites which they enclose. The dating of this field system is problematical and further research including archaeological excavation may be required in order to ascertain a dating for this field system and its associated buildings. The spatial relationship between the field walls and the house sites and hut sites would tend to suggest that these monuments represent a series of farmbuildings within a series of small irregular shaped fields. The presence of a panel of rock art (DG029-051) within this field system may suggest that these monuments are prehistoric in date. Alternatviely the rectangular shaped houses may be late-medieval or 17th century in date and may represent a clustered settlement with associated field system of medieval or post medieval date.
- DG029-053 House - indeterminate date
Description
Situated on S facing slope in rough mountain pasture with good views of the valley to from E through S to W. Two hut sites (DG029-057001/002-) are located 135m to the WNW and a third hut site (DG029-056) is 245m to the NNW. A panel of rock art (DG029-051) is located 120m to the NW. Present remains consist of a sub-rectangular house site (int. dims. 8.4m NW-SE; 4.3m NE-SW) which is defined by low grass-covered walls (H 0.5m ; T. 0.8m) with possible entrance gap (Wth 0.7m) located at NE end of NW wall. A small sunken rectangular hole in the centre of the interior appears to be modern. There is a second smaller house site (DG029-054) adjacent to the SW end of this house. The remains of a field wall (wall T 0.8m) running in an E-W direction is located 4m to the N. This field wall is part of a series of field boundaries which form a complex field system (DG029-052) running across the SW facing slope of Bawnloge Hill. These houses and a number of other hut sites all appear to be associated with the field system and appear to be the remains of a clustered settlement of unknown date.
