Description
Saggart (Teach Sagard) is a small medieval borough located on an exposed position of the Dublin marches/borderlands in the late medieval period. After the English Conquest, the lands of Saggart along with Newcastle Lyons, Esker and Crumlin became royal manors (Bradley and King 1987, 290). In 1332, Thomas Bretnagh, Provost of Saggart, accounted for £32 3s. 4d. rent of the farm and burgage land of Saggart together with the rents of the demesne lands, one water mill and the pleas and perquisites of the court (ibid.). The borough of Saggart was on an exposed position of the march/borderlands in the later middle ages and it was regularly subjected to attack. In 1471—2 the Irish parliament enacted that Saggart should be enclosed by defences because it had been recently wasted and burned by the O' Byrnes, O' Tooles and "Goulranyles". The defences of the borough were to be built by eighty labourers drawn from Balrothery, a further eighty from Coolock, another eighty from Castleknock, and eight from Newcastle; all of these labourers were to bring with them their own food, barrows, spades and pickaxes (Berry 1914, 809-11). Saggart was captured and burnt in 1580 by Fiach Mc Hugh O' Byrne. In the mid 17th century it was described as a village containing two castles in repair and the remains of another castle as well as some thatched houses and cabbins (Ball 1902-20, III, 115). According to D'Alton (1838, 724); 'In 1667 Sir Theophilus Jones, knight, had a grant of 14a plantation measure here; as had Thomas Den in 1682 , of 194a statute measure, a weekly market, and three yearly fairs here, with a court of pie poudre, tolls , &c.'. The layout of the settlement was linear, consisting of a single main street, intersected by a road running NW-SE. The marketplace was probably located at the intersection in the centre of the village where the plot pattern suggests that there may have been a triangular market place (Bradley and King 1987, 292). The Down Survey map of Newcastle Barony shows the settlement at Saggart clustered around two castles (DU021-034010-/014-) depicted as tower house type structures and a third ruinous castle annotated 'stump of a Castle' (DU021-034011- ) (Hibernia Reg.). The terrier of the Down Survey map of Saggart Parish recorded that in Saggart there are 'two Castles in repaire and one Stump of a Castle with some Thatcht Houses and Cabbins' (NLI Ms. 714). - DU021-034001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
Description
A monastery was founded in the 7th-century at Saggart (Teach Sagard) by St Moshagra (Moagra, Momhagra or Tagra), who was the son of Seanán of the Dál Meisin Corb and patron of the church at Glendalough (Ó Riain 2011, 498-9). The 3rd of March is the feastday of the saint who is associated with the church at Clonenagh [LA017-003001-], Co. Laois and the church at Killlynee [WI045-003001-], Co. Wicklow. He is also the patron saint of the church of Tomhaggard [Teach Moshagra WX047-052001-], Co. Wexford and was one of the signatories of the cáin or 'church tax' of Adhamhnán [Birr Synod]. The graveyard (DU021-034003-) of Saggart (Teach Sagard) has a raised interior and is oval in plan (dims. c. 70m N-S c. 52m E-W) which encloses Saggart church site (DU021-034002-), a cross-slab (DU021-034004-), two crosses (DU021-034006/007-) and a bullaun stone (DU021-034009-). There are traces of an inner fosse at the base of a slope running from N to SE (dims. Wth 5-7m x D 0.4m). The plan and circular-form of the graveyard indicates the probable existence of an ecclesiastical enclosure associated with St. Moshagra. - DU021-034002 Church
Description
Site of the medieval church of Saggart (Teach Sagard) dedicated to the 7th-century St Moshagra stands in the centre of a roughly circular-shaped graveyard (DU021-034003-) to the N of the village of Saggart. D'alton (1838, 721) recorded that; 'This parish constitutes a prebend in St. Patrick's church [DU018-020269-], of the annual value of £163, the rectory being part of its corps; the curacy is in the gift of the archbishop. The great tithes belong to the Dean of St. Patrick's, and there are 24a. of glebe within the parish. Immediately subsequent to the English invasion Saggard be came, as before - mentioned, one of the four royal manors in this county, and was more commonly called Teagh Saggard'. The chapel of Newtown (DU024-001001-) within the manor of Rathcoole and the chapel of Symon-Tallaght (DU021-042----) were both daughter chapels to the mother church of Saggart (Mason 1820, 60). In 1275 the church of Saggart was worth £20 per annum to the incumbent (Mason 1820, 59). The 1302-07 Ecclesiastical Taxation of the See of Dublin valued the 'Prebend of Tassagard' at £10 per annum with the tithe valued at 20s. (Cal. doc. Ire. vol. V, 237). An inquisition of 1547 finds the extent and value of the prebend of Tassagard, in lands and tithes, exclusive of the altarages, which were assigned to the curate, and the repair of the chancel, which was borne by the farmer of the tithes. The glebe lands have been since ascertained to be 16a. 1r. 4p. Another inquisition of the same date shows that the vicars choral of St. Patrick's had one castle and 22a. in this townland, lying in different parcels' (D'Alton 1838, 723). In 1615, the Royal Visitation of Dublin recorded that the Prebend of ‘Tassagard’ was served by ‘Rogerus Danby Magister in artibus [Master of arts]’, it was valued at £30 per annum and possessed a ‘very suffitient preacher’ (Ronan 1941, 8). In the 1615 Royal Visitation ‘Tassagard’ was served by the curate Emanuel Bullock and Mr. Roger Danby hath undertaken the cure of souls. The church building was described as ‘Ecclesia et cancella bene cum libris’ which translates as the ‘church and chancel were in good condition with books’ (Ronan 1941, 28). According to Ronan (ibid.) ‘The original prebend of 1192 was Killescopsatan, and Saggart was added to it before 1227 and gave its name to the prebend henceforth. The 1547 value, £20, increased by one fifth in 1615’. Ronan (1941, 28) recorded the following details about Saggart; ‘The founder of Tassagard (Tigh Sacra) is said to have been "Mosaccra, abbot, of Cluain-eidhneach [Clonenagh] in Laoighis, and of Tigh Sacra, in vicinity of Tamlacht [Tallaght], and , of Fionn-mhagh in Fotharta" (Martyrol. of Donegal, at 3 March). He is mentioned as having been present at the Synod of Flan Fabhla, Archbishop of Armagh, in 697. The district became a royal manor and the church was served by "the King's clerk".The church had subservient to it the chapels of Newtown [DU024-001001-] and Simon-Tallagh (Repert Virid). In 1630, Archbishop Bulkeley’s Visitation of Dublin, recorded the following details about Tassagarte (Saggart Church); ‘The tythes belong unto Mr. Cleburne, prebend of Tassagard, it beinge the corpes of his prebend, worth xxx libri per annum. Robert Jones serves the cure under the prebend, who hath an allowance from him. The church is fallen down. There are about thirty of that parish who come to hear divine service to the parish church of Rathcoole [DU021-030001-], because the parishe church is downe, all the rest of the parishioners are recusants’ (Ronan 1941, 72). The medieval church of Saggart was in good repair in 1615 but had collapsed by 1630 after which time it seems to have been abandoned (Ball 1905, 117; Bradley & King 1987, 293). A sunken-shaped rectangular area defined by the grass-covered outline of a levelled wall marks the site of the medieval church (ext. dims. c. 22.25m E-W; 10.85m N-S, wall T 1.3m) of Saggart which is visible in the centre of a possible ecclesiastical enclosure (DU021-034001-) and graveyard. The church walls survive to foundation level and comprises a possible nave and chancel (dims. c. 4.8m E-S; 6.4m N-S) with a post-1700 burial enclosure on the S side. A large mausoleum belonging to Edward Byrne was built over the E end of the possible chancel. Saggart Church site was described by Ní Mharcaigh (1997, 275) as follows; 'The medieval church was built at the highest point of a raised circular graveyard. The graveyard is defined to the east by a ditch and a curving stone wall. The church remains consist of foundations of varying height, up to 0.5m, mostly covered by sod and greatly disturbed by burials. It appears to have been approximately 22m long X 11m wide, with a short chancel at the east end. There was a transept on the north side of the nave. A rectangular foundation on the south side abuts the church wall but seems to be that of a separate building'. Description
Saggart (Teach Sagard) graveyard has a raised interior and is oval in plan (dims. c. 70m N-S x c. 52m E-W) with traces of an inner fosse at the base of slope running from N to SE (dims. Wth 5-7m, D 0.4m) with Saggart church site (DU021-034002-) in the centre. The plan of the graveyard indicates the probable existence of an ecclesiastical enclosure (DU021-034001-) associated with St. Mosacra who founded a monastery at Saggart in the 7th century. There is a granite cross-slab (DU021-034004-) set upright in the NW end of Saggart graveyard and a plain granite Latin cross DU021-034006-) in the centre of the graveyard and S of church foundations. It is missing one arm (dims. H 0.7m, Wth 0.7m, T 0.15m). A granite Latin cross lies near foundations of the medieval parish church. A granite finial was originally discovered in 1956 c. 4m out from the SW section of the graveyard wall. It lies NW of the church site. A cross base was formerly located at the E end of the graveyard. A carved stone head of granite was found in the graveyard (dims. H 0.4m x Wth 0.35m x D 0.15m) (Fitzgerald 1906-8, 15, 114; Ó Ríordáin 1947, 77, 86). Description
Granite slab or pillar-stone with rounded or hogback shape set upright in the NW end of Saggart graveyard (DU021-034003-). It is shaped and bordered and bears a single shaft with a ring-headed cross at each end and mouldings along the edge (dims. L 1.42m, Wth 0.32-0.47m, T 0.25-0.39m). Ó hÉalidhe has suggested a tenth-century date (Ó hÉalidhe 1973, 103, 61; Bradley & King 1987, 2, 294; Swords 2009, 101). Description
A granite Latin cross lies near foundations of the medieval parish church (DU021-034002-). Described by Ó Ríordáin (1947, 86) as ' Another cross (height about 50 cm) lies near the church in Saggart Grave yard. It has a cross-in-circle in relief at the intersection and another cross-in-circle on the other side near the broken end of the shaft'. - DU021-034008 Stone head
Description
A carved stone head of granite was found in Saggart graveyard (DU021-034003-) (dims. H 0.4m x Wth 0.35m x D 0.15m) (Fitzgerald 1906-8, 15, 114; Ó Ríordáin 1947, 77, 86). Described by Ó Ríordáin (1947, 85-6) as follows; 'The stone shown was found some years ago in the digging of a grave in the cemetery at Saggart. Through the courtesy of the caretaker, Mrs. Birmingham, we were able to remove it temporarily for photography. The height of the stone is about 53 cm., its maximum breadth 26 cm., and in general the thickness is about 15 cm. The upper part of the stone represents a carved head, the features of the face being extremely rude and primitive in character. The forehead slopes back to the level of the flat lower portion of the stone, while the chin projects about 6 cm. The coarse nature of the granite makes the features difficult to distinguish, and, because of the rounded character of the carving and the lack of definition, photography is not satisfactory though we experimented with the most varied types of lighting. The eyes (the right is better preserved than the left) are protruding circular bosses set high in the head and below them are heavy, curved ridges. The deep grooves below these and the other deep grooves which curve down from the nose delimit and accentuate the bulging cheeks between them. The face narrows in the region of the mouth which is a long broad groove that curves back to the flat surface of the stone. The lower lip is well marked, and helps to emphasise the grinning mouth. Near the bottom of the flat surface of the stone is a curved groove and below this is a slight stepping of the surface; these may possibly be an attempt to represent arms across the body of the figure. One corner is cut away in a manner that suggests that the stone was originally held in a socket'. - DU021-034009 Cross
Description
A possible cross base originally classified as a bullaun stone was located at the E end of Saggart church (DU021-034002-) and graveyard (DU021-034003-). It may have been buried in the fosse defining the edge of the graveyard which may have been built on the site of the 7th-century monastery founded by St Mosacra. Described by Ó Ríordáin (1947, 86) as follows; 'In his note on Saggart Lord Walter FitzGerald mentions a stone with a hollow in it known as the "wart-stone" but does not note the fact that it served as a socket for the cross or pillar the shaped end (height about 40 cm.) of which is still in position in the socket'.
