• GA122-001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In level farmland. Well-preserved subcircular rath (33m E-W; 28m N-S) defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. The fosse survives from WNW to N, and from SSE to S. The outer bank is only evident from W to N. A gap (Wth 2m) at SSE may be original. There is a souterrain (GA122-001001-) in the NNW sector of the fosse. As this is the only known archaeological monument in the townland, it may well be the site referred to by Fahey (1901, 230) as the ‘chief residence’ of the O'Drinan's, an important medieval legal family in south Galway. • GA122-001001 Souterrain
  Description

  Associated with a rath (GA122-001----), this well-preserved souterrain is located in the NNW sector of the fosse between the inner and outer banks. From the access point at its SW end the drystone-built passage (L >3m; Wth 0.78m max.; H 0.46-1.14m) initally runs staight but then curves eastwards where it ends at a squared off end wall. A possible creep is visible at the base of this wall. Drystone-walling (L 2.3m) extending to the SW from the entrance suggests the passage extended further in that direction.   Description

  Detached four-bay single-storey vernacular house, built c.1800, with loft over west end. Pitched thatched roof with slightly raised ridge, and low rendered chimneystack. Square-headed three-over-three pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed timber battened door. Outbuilding to east, forming courtyard to front of house, having pitched corrugated-iron roof and rendered walls/ Rubble limestone boundary wall with rendered piers, and hedging, to road.
