- GA084-006001 Church
Description
On the S-facing slope of a low hill in undulating pastureland. This fairly well-preserved rectangular church (int. dims. 10.2m E-W; 4.95m N-S; wall T 0.8-1m) is of medieval date. It is listed as being one of the possessions of the Dominicans of Athenry (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 221-2). Both gables survive to their original height though there is a breach in the W gable. Most of the architectural features have been robbed out as have the quoin stones. Doorways are evident in the N and S side-walls and there is a single-light window in the E gable. A wall recess is visible at the E end of S side-wall and there is another window immediately to its W. On inspection the interior of the church was being used as a shelter and feeding area for cattle. A later mortared stone wall runs W from the SW corner of the church; it is incorporated into a modern field wall that encloses a small field alongside the church to the NW. A children's burial ground (GA084-006002-) lies immediately to the E. (Cody 1989, 336-8, no. 151) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 17 January 2020
- GA084-006002 Children's burial ground
Description
Marked on the 1933 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a rectangular children's burial ground (c. 20m N-S; c. 15m E-W) immediately to the E of the E gable of a church (GA084-006002-). A field boundary marks its E limits. The burials are marked by small set stones which appear to indicate that they were arranged in parallel rows running N-S, however, a number of the stones have been uprooted and are lying loose on the ground (Cody 1989, 310-11, no. 143). A large sycamore tree is growing in the centre of the site. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 28 August 2019
- GA084-007 Mound
Description
On the highest point of an E-W running esker ridge. A small subcircular mound (7.5m N-S; 6.5m E-W; H 1.3m), threatened by quarrying, was excavated by Rynne (1985, 24). It consisted of a 'cairn-like core covered with earth and stones and contained within a low, rough kerb forming three sides of a square, open on the NE side'. Finds included animal bones, oyster shells, iron, bronze and glass fragments and a decorated bone plaque. Rynne (ibid.) proposed a late-medieval date for this 'enigmatic structure', of which no visible surface trace survives. (Knox 1917-18, 119-20, no. 22I; Cody 1989, 380-81, no. 165) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 17 July 2019
