• GA058-035002 Castle - tower house
  Description

  In existence in 1574 when 'Cahirnefieke' castle was in the possession of 'Tirlagh Carragh McSwyne' (Nolan 1901b, 119). Nolan (1901a, 40) equates it with 'the old castle in the … demesne of Brook Lodge'. This he describes as 'an altered castle … cut down in height and roofed as a residence in connection with a training stable'. He further notes that 'the spiral stone staircase was removed in 1815 and only one loophole is (perhaps) discernible through the plaster'. The tower house is incorporated into the W range of a series of outbuildings associated with the farmyard of Brooke Lodge house (GA058-035001-). It has been renovated and is four storeys high with a pitched slate roof and a chimney stack on its S gable. Access is gained through a doorway in E wall. One round-headed window is visible at 1st-floor level on E wall, the others are square headed (www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=GA&regno=30405825, accessed 29 September 2015).   Description

  Detached random rubble stone icehouse, built c.1770, now derelict and mostly overgrown. Circular plan with entrance corridor to north-west side. Pointed-arch entrance with brick soldier voussoirs to arch leading to ice chamber with corbelled ceiling. Built into slight slope in open field with mature trees to north-west.

• Brook Lodge, country house, 1760–1780 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey country house, built c.1770, with half-basement, bow-fronted entrance bay and having slightly projecting end bays. Four-bay single-storey wing to north-west with half-basement and stone chimneystack, and two-storey projecting bay with semi-basement to south-west. Now ruined and partly covered in ivy. Moulded eaves cornice to entrance bay. Render over random rubble limestone walls to ground floor, with brick walls above. Square-headed window openings with tooled stone sills and having red brick voussoirs to first floor. Square-headed entrance doorway with tooled stone block-and-start surround, moulded transom and cornice, rectangular overlight being flanked by panelled pilasters and having red brick relieving arch over. House set in open field with remains of former outbuildings including Gothic-style chapel to south west with random rubble stone boundary wall to north-west.

• Brook Lodge, farmyard complex, 1550–1800 · Regional interest
  Description

  Farmyard to Brook Lodge country house, part built c.1575 and rest built c.1770 and under renovation in 2010, comprising range of buildings forming east side of walled yard, with gateway to south-west corner of yard at rear and leading from bridge over Abbert River. Second walled yard to front of range. Buildings comprise unequal three-bay two-storey blocks flanking three-storey medieval tower house, and with further two-bay single-storey block to south. Pitched slate roofs to tower house and north block, south block roofless, tower house having rendered chimneystack to south gable. Pitched corrugated-iron roof to single-storey block. Roofless and partly collapsed buildings to front yard. Rendered rubble limestone walls. Tower house has round-headed window to first floor of east elevation, and square-headed windows elsewhere, as have other buildings. Timber A-frame roof to tower house, with timber dowels, and moulded timber shouldered and kneed architrave to internal doorway to top floor. Elliptical-arched throughway to south block. Coursed rubble limestone walls to yards, with rubble copings. Gateway has angled inner terminals comprising square-plan piers flanking square-headed pedestrian entrances, with central vehicular entrance. Single-arch bridge approach to west.

• Pallas Bridge, bridge, 1780–1900 · Regional interest
  Description

  Single-arch limestone road bridge over Abbert River, built c.1880, possibly rebuild of older bridge of c.1800, five arches of which stand to north. River arch is segmental, with squared and snecked rubble walls and with tooled voussoirs to arch rings and rock-faced copings to parapets. Northern round arches have random rubble walls with copings of rubble on edge. New concrete section to intrados of arches over road section.
