  Description

  Some 90m NE of a stream in an area subject to flooding. This fulacht fia is defined by a kidney-shaped mound (10.1m ENE-WSW; 6.8m ESE-WNW; H 0.7m) with a trough area (Wth 1.64m; D 1.24m) opening towards the SSE. • GA103-083 Fulacht fia
  Description

  In a marshy low-lying area. On inspection in December 1982, this fulacht fia was defined by a well-preserved kidney-shaped mound (11.8m N-S; 8.1m E-W; H 0.8m) opening towards the E. Burnt stone and clay were evident where the grass cover had been removed. A modern E-W running drain ran to its S. It was subsequently fully excavated in 2008 as it was on the line of the proposed N18 Oranmore to Gort motorway. The following details are from the excavation report (https://excavations.ie/report/2008/Galway/0019542/ last accessed 28 November 2019): 'This classic kidney-shaped mound was located on the western fringes of a turlough. An area measuring c. 200m2 was desodded by hand to reveal the extent of the well-preserved mound. The mound measured 14m north–south by 10m and reached a maximum height of 1.1m above ground level. A possible trough was located 1.5m from the centre of the mound, partially underlying the north-east quadrant. It measured 2.15m east–west by 1.3m.   Description

  In rough grazing land. Well-preserved circular cashel (diam. 38m) defined by a drystone wall. The original entrance gap appears to have been at SSE; it has been enlarged to accommodate a gate. At NNW the cashel wall has been incorporated into a later solid stone structure (GA103-086002-) which may have acted as a lookout or may be a folly.   Description

  In scrubland. Poorly preserved roughly circular cashel (diam. 32.5m) defined by a collapsed drystone wall overlain by a field wall from N to E. McCaffrey (1952, 188-9, no. 75) noted five small ‘enclosures’ abutting the inner wall-face at N, SE and W; traces of these still survive. A souterrain (GA103-088002-) is associated.   Description

  Associated with a cashel (GA103-088001-). Named 'Cave' on the 1838 and 'Cave (Site of)' on the 1933 editions of the OS 6-inch maps. On the latter map it is shown at the E sector of the cashel. • GA103-088003 House - 18th/19th century
  Description

  McCaffrey (1952, 188-9) recorded ‘six enclosures, house sites, and some old walls’ in the field immediately to the E of the cashel (G103-088001-). They are not marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map and on the 1933 edition the houses are depicted as unroofed structures. On inspection eight houses were noted dispersed over an area, c. 170m E-W by c. 130m N-S, which was heavily encroached with scrub. No discernible pattern was noted in the layout or orientation of the houses (av. L 10.5m; Wth 6.2m), which were constructed of double-faced walls with a rubble core (Wth 0.7m) and survived as low overgrown banks and walls (H 0.8m). • GA103-210 Souterrain
  Description

  In a low-lying marshy area, close to a stream. According to local information, during the course of work by the Land Commission around 1984, a stone-lined passage, running E-W, was discovered when a roof lintel was dislodged by a bulldozer. It was subsequently blocked up and no visible surface trace survives. Fulachta fia lie c. 60m to the SE (GA103-081----) and c. 100m to the SSW (GA103-083----) respectively.
