• GA084-039 Moated site
  Description

  On a gentle W-facing slope in pastureland. Depicted on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a roughly subcircular enclosure indicated by a broken line. A roofed house, aligned NW-SW, occupied its NW quadrant. On the 1933 edition of the map it is shown as a hachured square enclosure with an unroofed building in the interior. It consists of a moated site (34m N-S; 34m E-W), in fair condition, defined by an inner bank (Wth 3m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.5m), intervening fosse (Wth 2-3m) and outer bank (Wth 3m; int. H 1m; ext. H 0.3m). Both banks are overgrown with trees and bushes and a modern field wall overlies the outer bank at SE. There is a causewayed entrance gap (Wth 2m) at NE. Within the interior at NW lie three sunken rectangular structures (average L 8m; Wth 4m) defined by mortared stone walls and foundation lines. One of these may be the building shown on the OS 6-inch maps. A modern tree plantation in the centre is enclosed by a drystone wall. A rectangular enclosure or annexe (18m NW-SE; 8m NE-SW) defined by a low grassed-over bank abuts the SW side of the outer bank. A shallow fosse (L 20m; Wth 2m) running WSW from the S corner of the monument may be a leat. No visible surface trace was visible of a rectangular area, defined by a bank of earth and stone, that was noted by Cody (1989, 324-7, no. 143) in the S corner of the interior or the pathway leading out from the entrance gap that ran in a NE direction (L 18m) before turning N (L 30m) and then NW for a short distance. • GA084-040001 Castle - ringwork
  Description

  On a prominent hillock in gently undulating pastureland, c. 4km to the NNW of Athenry town (GA084-001----). Though named 'Convent (in Ruins)' on the 1838 and 1933 editions of the OS maps, the extant remains appear to be those of a castle. Furthermore, the 1574 list of Galway castles includes one at 'Carnan' then in the possession of a 'John Oge fitz John fitz Ed' (Nolan 1901, 119). What survives is a roughly oval enclosure (c. 50m E-W; c. 32m N-S) on the hill summit. This is defined from SE to S by a mortared stone wall (L 21m; Wth 0.9m; H 4m max.) with an almost square turret (ext. dims. 2.9m E-W; 2.8m N-S), of 16th-century date, projecting 2.2m beyond it at its SE end. The turret survives to a height of two storeys. The ground floor is filled with grass-covered rubble. It was lit by rectangular loops in the E and W walls. Traces of the spiral stairs survive in the NE corner at 1st-floor level and this floor was also lit by a rectangular loop in each wall. A pencilled note in the OS Name Books of 1838 suggests that the turret was in fact called 'the nunnery tower' (Cody 1989, 346, 350). However, there is no documentary evidence for a nunnery at this location: the castle was possibly occupied by nuns for a time in the post-Reformation period. To its W, the line of the enclosure continues as a ruined wall (Wth 1.8m; H 0.5m) in three straight lengths from S to W. From W through N to E, it is defined by a substantial stony bank but no trace of the enclosing element survives from E to S. These defences are supplemented at W by a deep fosse which cuts across the end of the hill summit in an arc from SW to NW, leaving a small triangular platform outside it. The interior is uneven with traces of at least two mortared walls running N-S, a possible rectangular house, and a large quarry pit. Outside this enclosure at the foot of the hill is a second roughly concentric earthen enclosure (E-W 125m; N-S 105m). This too takes a number of forms: a bank from NNE to SSW, a scarp from SSW to W and two banks with an intervening fosse from W to NNE. At N there is an entrance (Wth 10m) with a causeway across the fosse. This is connected to a corresponding entrance (Wth 2m) in the inner enclosure by a radial bank. Other radial banks/fosses also connect the inner and outer enclosures at S and W but at E a large pile of grassed-over stone obscures all. There is a second entrance in the outer enclosure at this point giving access to an adjoining roadway (GA084-040009-). • GA084-041 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  On a gentle S-facing slope in pastureland. This large subcircular cashel (76m N-S; 68m E-W), in fair condition, is defined by a low grassed-over drystone wall. Traces of a shallow external fosse are visible at NW. Either of two gaps (Wth 1.5m; 2m) at SE could be the original entrance (Cody 1989, 240, no. 68). The grassed-over foundation lines of a small rectangular building/house site (GA084-041002-) are visible in the NW quadrant of the interior. A children’s burial ground (GA084-041001-) occupies most of the NE quadrant and it overlies the NE corner of the house. There is a low natural flat-topped mound (diam. c. 15m) to NE of centre (ibid.). Some internal divisions are also evident. Abutting the cashel wall at SE is a rectangular area (L 25m; Wth 15m) defined by old field banks. Within it are the remains of another rectangular building (L 7m; Wth 4m) aligned E-W.   Within the NE quadrant of a cashel (GA084-041001-) and overlying the NE corner of a house site (GA084-041002-). A rectangular area (25.2m N-S; 22.8m E-W), delimited by a low grassed-over stone wall at S, is densely packed with set stones indicating graves aligned E-W. Four slab-lined graves (L c. 1.5m), marked by both head- and foot-stones, are visible within it, three towards the centre and one in the N sector.
