• GA005-051 Megalithic tomb - court tomb
  Description

  On SE-facing slopes of Slieve Dart overlooking gently undulating farmland. The monument consists of a pair of galleries set back to back and 1.75m apart. They are aligned roughly E-W and are incorporated in a cairn of uncertain outline (c. 22m E-W, c. 15m N-S). The E gallery (L 6.7m, Wth c. 1.5m), which consists of two chambers, is preceded by a short ante-chamber. In front, and to S of this, are the meagre remains of a court represented by two orthostats. The W gallery is poorly preserved; only its E end survives (L 2.5m, Wth c. 1.1m).   Description

  On level ground in otherwise hilly grassland. Marked on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1930) as an isolated souterrain. It is inaccessible but from a small gap in the roof, it appears to consist of an almost completely blocked-up drystone-built passage running on a NW-SE axis. According to Neary (1914, 120, no. 25), it 'marks the site or proximity of a ravelled fort', no visible surface trace of which survives.   Description

  On the brow of a hill in gently rolling grassland. Marked on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1930) as a circular enclosure (D c. 45m) and classified by Neary (1914, 120, no. 26) as 'a circular, earthen rath'. Only a vegetation band marks the site today. On his location map, Neary (ibid., 126) confuses its location with that of GA005-054----. A probable souterrain (GA005-053001-) is associated.   Some 220m SW of a ringfort (GA005-056----). Well-preserved subcircular rath (N-S 36m, E-W 34m) defined by a bank and external fosse; the latter is visible only at SW. A gap at SE may be original. A rectangular structure, now ruined, was built on the line of the bank at N. A number of gravel pits are also visible at N.   On the summit of a ridge in low- lying grassland. Known locally as 'Lis a Roch' (Neary 1914, 119, no. 27), this well-preserved oval rath (N-S 32m, E-W 23.5m) is defined by a scarp, intervening fosse and outer bank; the latter is overlain by a field wall from W through N to SE.   Description

  On a W-facing slope in grassland. A roughly subcircular grassed-over mound of earth and stone (13m by 8m). On the summit is a slight rectangular depression (L 6m, Wth 5m), possibly stone-lined. Though the whole mound could be the result of field clearance, the presence of the latter feature suggests that it is of some antiquity.
