- GA097-103 Moated site
Description
In gently undulating pastureland. This well-preserved rectangular moated site (c. 43m NW-SE; c. 35m NE-SW) is defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank (int. H 1.7m), with an indistinguishable inner edge, only survives at the S corner; elsewhere a scarp forms the enclosing element. The fosse (Wth 6.5m) is steep sided and flat bottomed and its SW side has been incorporated into a roadway that leads to a farmhouse to the NW. Both it and the inner bank are heavily overgrown. The outer bank (Wth 3.5m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 0.75m) is clearly visible on the SW side, across the roadway, as well as the NW and NE sides; iit is clear of overgrowth. Another moated site (GA097-104001-) lies c. 550m to the SW. (Cody 1989, 328-9, no. 145) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 3 December 2019
- GA097-104 Castle - unclassified
Description
Within the W half of a posible moated site (GA097-104001-). A castle existed here in 1574 when it was in the possession of 'Olyverus Roe burke' (Nolan 1901, 121). It is unclear whether the surviving remains of the rectangular two-storey gabled building (>12.3m, E-W; 5.8m N-S) now visible are those of the castle or are those of an ancillary or later building. The remains consist of the E gable (H 5m; T 0.85m) and the adjoining returns of the N (L 3.1m; H 3m; T 0.9m) and S side-walls (L 1m; H 1.5m). No visible trace of the W gable survives. The walls are rubble built and many of the corner stones have been robbed out. Part of a basal plinth is visible externally at the NE corner where a slight base-batter is also discernible. There is a breach (Wth c. 2m at ground level) in the gable wall, which may be the result of collapse but it more likely indicates the former site of an ope, possibly a doorway, at ground level. Above it, at 1st-floor level, there was a window but only the N side of its embrasure survives. The only other surviving architectural feature is a horizontal offset in the masonry which is visible internally c. 1.7m above ground level; it indicates the position of the 1st floor. Traces of another building (GA097-104002-) are visible c. 10m to E of this building. (Cody 1989, 367-9) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 4 December 2019
- GA097-104001 Moated site
Description
In low-lying marshy grassland. This raised rectangular platform (53m E-W; 50m N-S; H 1-2m) is delimited by the remains of a grass-covered wall (Wth 1m; int. H 0.5-0.7m) running around its perimeter. A NW-SE running field boundary cuts across its SW corner. A fosse (Wth 2m) is evident along the S, W and N sides of the platform; on the S side it survives as a slight depression (Cody 1989, 367-9). Beyond this an outer bank is visible along the W and N sides. There is a causeway across the fosse midway along N side but there is no corresponding gap in the platform. The interior is level and there is a possible castle (GA097-104---) in the W half, to the S of which a series of grassed-over stony banks may indicate internal divisions. Another building (GA097-104002-) is visible c. 10m to the E of the castle. This monument may be the remains of a moated site that was reused as a bawn when the castle was built. - GA097-104002 Building
Description
Within the interior of a possible moated site (GA097-104001-) and c. 10m to the E of a possible castle (GA097-104----). This rectangular building (int. dims. 15m E-W; 5m N-S) is defined by a grass-covered stony bank (Wth 2m; H 0.5m) (Cody 1989, 367). Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 4 December 2019
- GA097-105 Enclosure
Description
On a rise in undulating grassland. This poorly preserved roughly oval enclosure (c. 63m E-W; c. 45m N-S) is defined by an earthen bank from NNW to E and from SE to S; elsewhere a scarp forms the enclosing element. A field wall cuts across it from NW to SW and a deep gravel pit has been dug into the interior at E. Another enclosure (GA097-106----) lies c. 225m to the NNE. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 7 March 2019
- GA097-106 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a slight rise in pastureland, some 225m to the NNE of an enclosure (GA096-105----). This poorly preserved irregular enclosure (35m E-W; 32m N-S) is defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.1m) from NW to NE and from SE to SW; a squared-off scarp forms the enclosing element along E and W sides. Possibly a rath.
