• GA043-085001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  On a slight rise in gently undulating farmland. The slightly curving line of the byroad to S of the church (GA043-085002-), along which the td. boundary runs, appears to preserve part of the line of a large subcircular enclosure (N-S >100m, E-W >85m) from SW to W. From W through N to NNE, its continuation can be traced in a faint curving earthen bank (Wth c. 4m, H 0.5m) in the field to N of the church. The latter, almost centrally placed within the enclosure, is surrounded by a roughly rectangular graveyard within which is a fine burial vault with a corbelled roof. It is dedicated to one 'Edmundos de Burgo' and dated 1730 (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 129-30). The site of a spring well called 'Corr' (ibid.) is indicated on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1932) 45m WNW of the church, just within the line of the enclosure. • GA043-085002 Church
  Description

  In SE quadrant of an early ecclesiastical enclosure (GA043-085001-). A rectangular late medieval church (E-W; L 18.3m, Wth 6.2m) in good condition, apart from E end of N wall which is no longer extant. The original doorway, with a pointed arch, is situated about mid-point along S wall. There are two round-headed windows and one flat-headed single light in S wall and a round-headed window in W gable. There is also a window in E gable, now much obscured by ivy, which is described in OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 129-30) as 'a lancet'. Immediately to S of it is an aumbry. To W of the doorway, the grassed-over foundations of an internal dividing wall are visible. This and the six corbels at W end of N and S walls and on W gable, suggest the former presence of a loft at this end.
