• GA070-088 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  To S of the main Galway-Roscommon road in a house cluster called 'Carnoneen'. In existence in 1574 when 'Qworanonyn' castle was in the possession of 'Thomas Balve' (Nolan 1901b, 118). Marked on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1934) as a small unroofed rectangular structure (c. 10m by c. 5m), immediately WSW of the RC church. Described in OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 288) as 'a small castle nearly destroyed', and by Nolan (1901a, 39-40) as 'a low, uninteresting ruin without even a loophole. Walls 5 feet [1.5m] thick, only measureable side 24 feet [7.3m], probable cubic contents 35,000 feet [10,668m]: is on rather high ground'. According to local information, it was demolished some 20 years ago due to its dangerous condition. No visible surface trace survives. A possible souterrain (GA070-090----) is associated.   Description

  On SW bank of the River Clare in undulating farmland; it stands on N boundary of an irregularly shaped graveyard (GA070-089001-) just upstream from 'Lackagh Bridge'. The remains are those of a rectangular medieval parish church (E-W; L 15.4m, Wth 7.1m) in fair condition. Though little survives of E gable, the other walls still stand to full height. There is a pointed arch doorway towards W end of S wall. Traces of a blocked window ope are also visible internally at E end of same wall. A castle (GA070-091----) stands 70m to NE on opposite bank of the river.   Description

  This graveyard, which is still in use, is associated with the church (GA070-089----) located in its NNE sector. On the 1934 edition of the OS 6-inch map it was roughly rectangular in plan (c. 73m N-S; c. 52m E-W) but it has subsequently been extended to the S and W. The earliest graveslab noted on inspection in August 1983 dated to 1882. This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 2/2002).   Description

  On a SW-facing slope in a house cluster. According to local tradition, 'a cave or tunnel' is said to run SW from this location for c. 1km before re-emerging in Caraunkeelwy td. No visible surface trace survives. The presence of a castle (GA070-088----) and the site of a 'R.C. Chapel' in the same area, raise the possibility that the 'cave' may not be a souterrain.   Description

  Detached four-bay single-storey with attic vernacular house, built c.1800, having windbreak to entrance. Pitched thatched roof with blocked ridge and limewashed chimneystack. Rendered copings and eaves course. Limewashed coursed random rubble stone walls. Square-headed openings with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows and tooled limestone sills. Square-headed timber battened half-door door to entrance. Set in car park with Lackagh Heritage Park to rear and small garden to front.
