• GA056-112 Castle - tower house
  Description

  In a low-lying wooded area. In existence in 1574 when it was in the possession of 'Walter fitz Ab fitz Ed.' (Nolan 1901b, 118). A poorly preserved ivy-covered tower: only NE wall (L 9.4m) and the returns of SE and NW walls (L c. 4m) survive to a height of three storeys. A pointed arch doorway in NE wall gives access to a small lobby with the guardroom to N and the shell of the spiral stairs to S. There is no evidence of a vault. An intramural chamber is visible in NE wall on 1st floor. Windows consist of rectangular and round-headed slits, a gun loop is visible beneath one in SE wall, and a possible ogee-headed window in NE wall.   Description

  In level pastureland. Aerial reconnaissance revealed a roughly circular cropmark enclosure (CUCAP). Apart from a slight rise in the field level, no visible surface trace survives. • Mace House, house, 1780–1800 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay single-storey house, built c.1790, having entrance porch to front. Hipped slate roof with ashlar chimneystack to centre of ridge, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered walls with rendered plinth. Square-headed window openings with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows and painted stone sills. Square-headed glazed timber panel door with render surround. Porch has parapet, render plinth, raised rendered quoins and render surround to front window. Single-storey outbuilding or former house to rear now connected to main house and has pitched slate roof with dormer attic and rendered random rubble stone walls with square-headed windows having painted stone sills. Set on avenue with farmyard to rear having two-storey painted random rubble stone outbuilding. Stone boundary wall to rear and ruins of medieval castle to site.
