• GA071-064001 Castle - tower house
  Description

  In flat pastureland, formerly demesne land. In existence before 1504 when it was 'destroyed' by 'Mac William De Burgo' (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 236-7, 243) (see also GA059-037----). The 'Monivea Castle' marked on OS 6-inch maps was an 18-19th-C mansion, incorporating an original tower house, which was demolished c. 1940 (Bence-Jones 1978, 208). The standing remains comprise a much-altered late medieval rectangular tower (L 12.5m, Wth 9.5m) probably of three/four storeys, now inaccessible. The modern doorway in E wall is probably on the site of the original. Apart from one two-light flat-headed window on upper face of E wall, all the surviving opes appear to be of 18-19th-C date. The stepped parapets are also of similar date, and a number of chimney stacks are visible at roof level.   Description

  The following description is from the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage web site: https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/buildings-search/building/30407110/ffrench-mausoleum-monivea-demesne-co-galway last accessed 3 November 2020. This highly unusual mausoleum, commissioned by Kathleen de Kindiard in 1897 to house the remains of her father, is in the form of a medieval towerhouse, and took four years to build. The architect was reportedly Francis Persse, younger brother of Lady Augusta Gregory, founder of the Abbey Theatre. When Kathleen died in 1938 she too was laid to rest in the crypt of the mausoleum. A stunning feature in the forest, the mausoleum is a unique and beautifully crafted structure. The main architectural features include: Overhanging crenellated parapet with stepped corner merlons, supported on stone corbels. Squared and snecked Wicklow granite walls with battered base. Carved shield and decoration set in rectangular recess above entrance. Trefoil stone vents to base. Pair of ogee-headed stained-glass windows to north and south, granite surround with weathered sill, relieving arch above. Lancet-headed tripartite stained-glass granite-framed window completed by Mayer of Munich, with trefoil tracery and label-moulding above to rear. Slim lancet-headed openings to rear of tower. Lancet-headed double-leaf sheeted oak entrance door with decorative wrought-iron hinges, granite label-moulding above and Gothic-style roll moulded door surround, accessed by six granite steps.   Freestanding icehouse, built c.1860, altered c.2000. Now disused. Main chamber beneath earth roof, with entrance to north. Random rubble limestone gabled façade with opening to base having with limestone lintel. Random rubble retaining walls with cement coping to west leading to opening with timber lintel. Set in forest, with gravel path surrounding and stone steps to east.

  Description

  Group of single and two-storey outbuildings, built c.1850, now derelict. L-shaped arrangement with north and east ranges. Five-bay two-storey block to north with adjacent two-bay single-storey building. Four-bay two-storey dwelling to east with six-bay two-storey adjacent outbuilding. Segmental integral carriage arch with cut-stone voussoirs to north. Pitched natural slate roof to all buildings except for corrugated-iron roof to east face of six-bay building. Rendered chimneystack to ridge of dwelling, stone chimneystack to ridge of north range. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Square-headed window openings with one-over-one and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows to dwelling. Remains of tripartite timber casement and two-over-two pane sliding sash windows elsewhere with limestone sills. Dressed limestone quoins and keystone to ground floor rear openings of six-bay dwelling, with central round-arch entrance, sheeted timber door with radial timber fanlight above, oculus window above entrance. Two segmental-arch openings with cut-stone voussoirs to north range, one to east. Set in farm courtyard arrangement with ruins of Monivea Castle adjacent to dwelling. Coursed rubble limestone boundary wall to west.
