- GA069-034 Cist
Description
In a gravel hillock in gently undulating countryside. Discovered in 1934 during quarrying, it consisted of a short slab-built rectangular cist (NE-SW; L 0.9m, Wth 0.45m, H 0.5m), with a cobbled floor and roofed with a capstone. It contained the crouched skeleton of an adult male lying on its left side with the head towards NE end. Only a slight hollow and some narrow flagstones mark the site (Shea 1936a, 24-33; Waddell 1975, 19-20; 1990, 94). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
