• GA103-164 Enclosure - large enclosure
  Description

  In farmland, c. 160m to the N of the estuary of the Kilcolgan River. Marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 80m) which was clipped by a NNE-SSW running field boundary at NW and SW; partially levelled by the time of the 1933 edition. Described by Redington (1912b, 176) as ‘the remains of a very large but feebly defended fort or camp’ which was defined by ‘one enclosing bank … and a shallow ditch’. McCaffrey (1952, 202, no. 21) recorded that due to tillage operations, all that was evident was a ‘portion of a bank’ (L c. 172m). On inspection in December 1982 no visible surface trace survived.   Description

  On the edge of the steep scarp which forms the N bank of the Kilcolgan River. This heavily overgrown D-shaped rath (c. 42.5m E-W) is defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. Whether its D-shape is deliberate or due to cliff-edge erosion is unclear. The outer bank has been almost totally destroyed by a laneway which borders the monument from W through N to E. The fosse is currently used as a rubbish dump. Overgrowth obscures the enclosing elements.   Description

  On the edge of a high bluff on the N bank of the estuary of the Kilcolgan River. A circular area (diam. 19m) is defined by a deep steep-sided fosse with an external earthen bank. Though Redington (1912, 176) mentioned ‘a circular bank … within it’, McCaffrey (1952, 202, no. 20) noted the absence of any internal bank. The interior is uneven.   Detached four-bay single-storey vernacular house with attic storey, built c.1800, having recent five-bay two-storey extension with thatched roof to rear (north). Now in use as public house. Pitched thatched roof having painted rendered chimneystack. Painted smooth rendered walls having painted rendered quoins. Square-headed window openings having painted smooth render surrounds, painted stone sills and one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed door opening having replacement timber door. Smooth rendered boundary walls.

  Detached three-bay single-storey vernacular house with attic storey, built c.1910, having entrance porch to front (south) elevation, and recent single-storey extension to rear. Half-hipped thatched roof having decoratively scolloped ridge with thatched animal finial, and rendered chimneystack. Painted rendered walls. Square-headed window openings having painted stone sills and replacement timber windows. Square-headed door opening having replacement uPVC door. Wrought-iron pedestrian gate with rendered piers and boundary walls to front garden.
