  Description

  Described by Knox (1917-18, 119, no. 20) as 'a small rath, much altered for ornamental purposes, 48ft. by 36ft.' On inspection it proved to be a circular grove of trees on a rise c. Im above the surrounding land. Within the grove there was a circular pathway delimited by a wall and at its centre a seating area. It is a landscape feature of 19th/20th-century date.   Description

  In gently rolling pastureland. Referred to by Knox (1918, 104, no. 19) as ‘the Cashel of Raheen’; traces of its 'stout curved ramparts' survived at N but it was to 'a great extent a reconstruction'. It consists of a roughly triangular area defined from NW to NNE by an arc of substantial but collapsed drystone walls. Its other sides are straight and are defined respectively by a roadway and a natural scarp. Cody (1989, 300-2, no. 124) noted that the interior was marshy and doubted its antiquity, suggesting that it may have been a landscape feature at the entrance to the avenue leading to Raheen House (pers. comm. 1987).   Description

  This cross-slab, recorded by Bigger (1900, 72, 85) as standing between 'Templedermot' (LF021-048002-) and 'Templemore' (LF021-048004-) on Inchcleraun Island, Co. Longford (see LF021-048005- for original location), is now in the care of the OPW (Athenry depot, Co. Galway). It is a round-topped, subrectangular pillar of grey limestone (H 0.74m; max. dims. 0.34m x 0.14m) with an incised cross carved on both faces. On one face is a well-defined, incised, single-lined Latin cross contained within a single-lined incised cross with stepped angles at the junctions of the arms and rectangular shaped terminals. The remains of an incised single-line border can be seen enclosing the shaft of the cross. Just below the head of the cross this border appears to turn into a possible spiral pattern resembling the head of the crosier. On either side of the cross head there is an incised circle carved in an area between the arms of the cross. On the other face of the slab there is a single-line Latin cross with rounded angles at the junctions of the arms with the faintest suggestion that this may have been an incised ringed-headed cross with thistle or bell-shaped quadrants.   Description

  This cross-slab was recorded by Bigger (1900, 80-81) as being located close to 'The Woman's Church' (LF021-048007-) on Inchcleraun island, Co. Longford (see LF021-048009- for original location). It is now in the care of the OPW (Athenry depot, Co. Galway). Bigger (ibid.) described it as 'a stone bearing incised on its surface a Celtic interlaced cross with remains of an Irish inscription. It is a rough, irregular slab of sandstone grit about 6 inches [0.15m] thick and about 26 inches [0.66m] by 21 inches [0.53m] in size'. This irregularly shaped slab (H 0.69m; 0.55m x 0.15m) is decorated with a triple-lined incised double, Latin cross with central incised circle containing a geometric pattern and expanded D-shaped terminals which also contain geometric patterns. Running parallel along both sides of the cross are the remains of a two line Irish inscription. Crawford (1913, 326) recorded one of these, which was in half uncial script and is now very worn and no longer decipherable, as reading 'OR [OIT] DO LAITHB[ER]TACH'. This translates as 'A Prayer For Laithb[er]tach'. The second inscription reads 'B, ?, A, C, H', the second letter being too worn to decipher.   Description

  This cross-slab was formerly located on Inchcleraun Island, Co. Longford (see LF021-048010- for original location). It is now in the care of the OPW (Athenry depot, Co. Galway). Of grey fossiliferous limestone, the round-topped roughly subrectangular slab (H 0.49m; 0.3m x 0.09m) bears a simple Latin cross with expanded triangular-shaped terminals. On the lower left hand quadrant of the slab, there is a small incised double or s-shaped spiral motif.   Description

  This record is for the present location of portion of a cross shaft depicted leaning against a Tau cross (CL016-052002-/CL017-116003-) on a S-facing slope, c. 15m to the S of the Leamaneh to Kilnaboy road in Co. Clare. The stone fragment ‘may have formed the bottom of the shaft of the [tau] cross’ (Harbison 2009, 32). The fragment (L 0.48m; Wth 0.28m; T 0.1m) is stored in the OPW depot in Athenry. The upper, decorated portion of the tau cross is currently on display in the old protestant church of Corofin (CL017-116001-), which serves as an interpretative centre.   Description

  Macalister (1916-17, 151, no. 21, and plate XVI) recorded this cross-slab on the N wall of the chancel of St Caimin's Church (CL029-009011-), on Inis Cealtra (Holy Island), Co. Clare. He described it as being of 'Eight-century type' and it measured '1 foot 7 inches by 1 foot 1 inch by 3 inches [0.48m by 0.33m by 0.07m]. Within a circle of two lines, a cross formed of four arcs of circles, with interlacing at the intersection, was visible. The ends of the arcs terminated with a spiral treatment and within the cantons were triskeles of one line. When de Paor recorded the slab in the 1970s (SMR file), it was on the S wall of the nave of the church. It is currently in the OPW depot in Athenry, Co. Galway.   Description

  This graveslab was originally located in the Saint’s Graveyard (CL029-009030-) on Inis Cealtra (Holy Island), Co. Clare - see CL029-009033- for original location). It is visible still in situ in a photograph from de Paor’s excavation report (1997) and was indicated as such on his plan (SMR file). It was exhibited in Mountshannon in August 1982 and was then placed for safe keeping in the OPW depot in Athenry, Co. Galway where it has SMR number (GA084-151007-). The slab (H 1.6m; Wth 0.59m; T 0.06m) has a ringed Latin cross in false relief. All four terminals have semicircular expansions, that of the shaft dividing into two petals. There is four-pointed recess at the centre of the cross. There are the outlines of two shod feet on the right hand side, the right foot above the arm of the cross and the left foot below it, both pointing to the top. Macalister (1916-17, 153, no. 31, plate XX) suggests that this may indicate that the person commemorated was a pilgrim. The inscription which is incised in two lines above the head of the cross and inverted reads ‘COSCRACH LAIGNECH’ (Coscrach the Leinsterman). The form of this cross is unique at Inis Cealtra and is dated by Macalister (ibid.) to the 10th century. When recorded by Macalister (1916-17, 167, no. 92, and plate XXIV), it was on the S wall of the nave of St Caimin’s Church (CL029-009011-) on Inis Cealtra (Holy Island), Co. Clare. Clare. It was exhibited in Mountshannon in August 1982 and was then placed for safe keeping in the OPW depot in Athenry, Co. Galway. The slab (H 0.96m; Wth 0.38m; T 0.06m) is irregular in shape and well-preserved. The face is dressed and deeply incised with an outline Latin cross hollowed at the angles and resting on a trapezoidal base. An inscription in two lines is incised above the cross and inverted and it reads ‘ORDOMAEL PATRAIC’ (with the OR overlined). It was dated by Macalister (ibid.) to the 12th century.   This gable finial, originally from Inis Cealtra (Holy Island), Co. Clare, is now in the the care of the OPW (Athenry depot, Co. Galway).   Description

  Originally located on High Island (see GA021-026032-). Recorded by Fisher (2014, 201, no. 1, Fig. 7.1), this cross-slab (H 0.97m; Wth 0.31m; T 0.02-0.03m) of garnet mica-schist formed the footstone of Grave 1, which contained skeletal remains dating from the early 11th to the late 12th century. It was probably reused. It tapers slightly to a rounded base and expands with convex armpits in the upper part to form a minimal cross with a squared head. Both faces are decorated. The east face bears irregular notches which define the head of an outline Latin cross. Irregular bosses are evident in the upper armpits. A central roundel encloses an equal-armed linear cross, the three upper limbs of which terminate in forks. On the west face a similar linear cross is set on a boss. The E face bears a Latin cross in low relief with large forks in the upper and side limbs. The shaft rises from a horizontal bar with crosslet terminals. A Greek cross with forked terminals is incised on the W face. Four bosses with hollowed centres are visible between the arms of the cross and damaged bosses are evident at the upper angles of the slab. It is a short-armed cruciform slab (H 0.94m; Wth 0.39m) of garnet mica-schist, which was incorporated into the external face of the E wall of the church (GA021-026014-) and it forms the headstone of the grave. Both faces are decorated. The cross-head on the E face bears three incised circles forming a double roundel. The concealed W face is decorated with a cross with expanded arms and sunken armpits. A central double roundel encloses a linear Greek cross superimposed on an outline Greek cross with flaring arms.   Originally located on High Island (see GA021-026038-). Recorded by Fisher (2014, 203-4, no. 7, Fig. 7.2), this decorated cross-slab is one of three (see also GA021-026036- and GA021-026037-) associated with Grave 3. A limestone slab (H 0.89m; Wth 0.32m; T 0.09m), it is one of only two found on the island, the other being the cover stone (GA021-026037-) of the grave. It formed the footstone and was just decorated on its W face. Most of the stone was concealed and it was broken in two pieces. The cross-head is carved in low relief and the lower armpits are notched. A border runs around the head and centrally located is a double roundel which encloses a cross. The shaft bears a framed incised figure that is probably a secondary feature. The figure stands in an orans position and each hand holds a rectangular object, possibly a book. The E face of the slab was very roughly dressed and no decoration is evident. This cross-slab has been repaired and a replica has been placed on site.   Description

  Originally located in the graveyard (GA021-026026-) on High Island (see GA021-026042-). Recorded by Fisher (2014, 206, no. 11, Fig. 7.2), this tapering garnet mica-schist cross-slab (H 0.62m; Wth 0.39m; T 0.06m) formed the footstone of Grave 5, which contained the earliest skeletal remains on site, dating from the late 9th to the late 10th century. The slab was found in situ but is probably reused. Only its E face is decorated. It bears an expansional cross in relief with a raised central roundel and roughly D-shaped terminals. Incised grooves in the upper and lower terminals and horizontal bars in the side terminals are suggestive of an anthropomorphic figure. The roundel is notched at the angles to form an equal-armed cross with expanded arms and a linear cross is superimposed on this. A replica cross-slab has been placed on site. At the junctions with the outer ring the cross-arms fork as oblique terminals. An incised roundel is visible in each quadrant. Linear Greek crosses are visible in the upper two. The lower right edge of the slab appears to have been chamfered to enable its insertion into a socket. A replica of it has been placed on High Island. A triquetra is visible in the top terminal and there is a boss or raised area in the upper left quadrant. A worn linear cross within a double roundel and is visible on the S face. The socket is incomplete as a result of the break in the slab (Fisher 2014, 214, no. 58, Fig. 7.10). It is possible that this may be the base of a cross (see GA021-026079-), which is now missing, based on a drawing by Wakeman in 1839 (Wakeman 1839a).   Description

  According to Harbison (1971, 31), this effigial graveslab was originally found within the walls of Dysert O’Dea church (CL025-091001-) in county Clare. It was hung on the external S wall of the church on the E side of the decorative doorway. Hunt (1974, vol. 1, 120) describes it as ‘a fragment of a wedge-shaped slab bearing the lower part of a (presumably male) figure carved in very flat relief. The edge of the slab is bordered by a rope-moulding placed between two rolled mouldings. The figure is apparently portrayed in a surcoat, the lower part of which can be seen flaring outwards from the waist to a point above the knees. The outline of the legs appears below it, and these seem to be covered by the folds of a garment, but the details are very obscure because of the heavy exfoliation of the original surface. The bare feet splay outwards and downwards. The only remaining detail is that of the right foot which, oddly enough, is carved as a left foot.’ The slab (H 1m; Wth 0.49m; T 0.6m), the upper left part of which is now missing, is housed in the OPW depot in Athenry.   Description

  This cross-slab (H 1.1m; max. Wth 0.69m; T 0.07m) was found ‘among the ruins of the church [WM015-001----] on the island of Inisbofin, in Lough Ree’ (Petrie and Stokes 1872, Vol. 1, 57, Fig. 122). A drawing by Stokes (ibid.), from a rubbing of the slab taken in 1869 by Rev. James Graves, shows a two-line ringed cross with a central circle and plain straight ended terminals, apart from the base which was looped. An inscription, in two lines, across the top of the slab reads [O]ROIT DO [C]ORMACAN (Pray for Cormacán). Due to a fracture, the letters O on the first line and C on the second line were missing. When visited by Macalister (1912, 29-30), the slab had been broken into three pieces. It has since been repaired and is currently kept in the OPW depot in Athenry.   Only two fragments of this cross-slab survive. The larger fragment, which Crawford (1913, 329, 1. (h)) recorded as being ‘1 ft. 2 in. by 1 ft. [c. 0.35m by 0.3m]’, bears what appears to be the lower part of the shaft of the cross, which ends in a D-shaped terminal with a fret pattern. The smaller fragment ‘5 in. by 4 in. [0.12m by 0.1m]’ (ibid.) bears most of the D-shaped terminal of the dexter arm; its fret pattern is slightly different to that of the other terminal. Differing fret patterns are also visible on the cross-slab (GA084-151032-/WM015-001009-). The fragments were found during ground-clearance works in the vicinity of the church (WM015-001----) on Inchbofin island on Lough Ree, Co.   A number of architectural fragments currently located in the OPW depot in Athenry are originally from the ecclesiastical site on Inchbofin, Lough Ree, Co. Westmeath – see WM015-001017-. They include: A voussoir bearing a human face with deeply hollowed eyes, a barely discernible nose and a lightly hollowed mouth. The asymmetrical chin is in high relief. The arcs of two circles form the head. Some diagonal tooling is visible and the sinister face is rough (Carved Stone Inventory). Labelled Inchbofin B3 in depot. A chamfered jambstone bearing a small human face on the chamfer. The figure has slanting oval eyes, a damaged nose and a wide upwards curving mouth (Carved Stone Inventory). Labelled Inchbofin B4 in depot. A possible jambstone with a double moulding. Labelled B12 in the depot. Two possible voussoirs: one bearing a head, the other a decorative moulding.   Detached five-bay two-storey U-plan house, built c.1880, having asymmetrical front (south) elevation having full-height projecting end bays, that to west fronted by canted bay with windows and projection to east having canted plan. Flat-roofed entrance porch to corner between west projection and façade proper. Three-bay return elevation to east and two-bay to west. Two-storey single-bay extension with pitched slate roof to rear elevation of west return. Hipped slate roofs having slate ridge tiles, rendered chimneystacks with painted pots, and moulded render cornice to porch and to ground floor of canted bay. Painted lined-and-ruled rendered walls with cut limestone plinth, and having recessed panel details to ground floor canted-bay window and porch. Square-headed window openings having cut limestone sills. Two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows to east elevation and first floor of west elevation, replacement uPVC windows to front elevation and other openings to west elevation, and replacement timber windows to rear elevation.
