• GA071-082002 Enclosure
  Description

  Surrounding a church (GA071-082003-). Aerial reconnaissance in July 1917 (CUCAP BGI 34) revealed a large subrectangular enclosure (NNE-SSW c. 90m, ESE-WNW c. 40m ext.) around the church. This is best preserved along N and E sides where it is visible on the ground as an earthen scarp (H 1m max.) with traces of an external fosse. Two drainage trenches run into the fosse at NE and N, and NW corner appears to be overlain by tillage ridges. Apart from the church, which stands in N half of the enclosure, no other internal features are visible, but a number of indistinct cropmarks are visible from the air immediately to NW. • GA071-082003 Religious house - Franciscan Third Order Regular
  Description

  On a td. boundary in low-lying pastureland. According to Gwynn and Hadcock (1970, 275), this is the site of a house of the Franciscan Third Order founded in 1442. The standing remains comprise a gaunt and partially ivy-covered rectangular building (ESE-WNE; L >19.1m, Wth 6.75m), in fair condition, possibly of late medieval date. The E gable along with substantial sections of N wall, and foundations of S survive but there is no trace of W gable. There is a roughly built rectangular-headed doorway towards E end of N wall. The E gable contains a damaged pointed arch window of two lights with trefoliated heads. The only other architectural feature is the addition of a 'skin' of masonry (Wth 0.2M) on the inner faces of N and S walls at W end of the building. That on N wall is up to 3m in height and was probably designed to support a second storey at this end of the building. An enclosure (GA071-082002-) is associated. 'Templemoyle Church' (GA084-127002-) stands 265m to S and a burial ground (GA071-082----) c. 240m to SE.   Description

  On a S-facing slope in undulating grassland. Poorly preserved almost circular rath (N-S 38m, E-W 37m) defined by a collapsed grassed-over bank of earth and stone best preserved at W.   Description

  On S-facing slope in undulating grassland. A circular platform (D 8.8m, H 0.75m), in the corner of a field, composed mainly of small grassed-over stones. The top is dished in profile. Possibly a house or, less likely, a barrow. A number of low grassed-over earth and stone banks are also visible c. 30m to S. • GA071-089 Burial
  Description

  Human remains were discovered in the W face of a sand and gravel quarry in 2011. Excavated under licence (11E0430) it was found to comprise a shallow grave containing the remains an adult male in a crouched position. The lower limbs had been exposed in the quarry face and were without feet; these may have been removed in the quarrying process or by subsequent slippage of the quarry face. The exposed bone was weathered, indicating that the remains had been exposed to the elements for some time. A small hole in the skull was the only noticeable blemish in the skeleton that was otherwise in good condition. This wound was inflicted by a small, socketed, iron arrowhead which had pierced the skull and was recovered from the interior. A small section of a souterrain (GA071-090----) also was exposed in the same quarry face some 24m to the NE. • GA071-090 Souterrain
  Description

  The creep of a souterrain and human remains (GA071-089----) were discovered in the W face of a sand and gravel quarry in 2011. The creep was defined by two low portions of vertical walling (ext. Wth 1.50m; ext. H 1m). The tops of the walls were 0.30m below ground surface and the E wall appeared to support a partially discplaced lintel. On the ground surface above and to the N of the creep, a shallow rectangular depression may indicate the track of the souterrain.
