• GA029-068001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  In the centre of Tuam town (GA029-199----) close to S bank of the River Nanny, it straddles NE end of Bishop St. Marked on OS 6-inch maps as a curving boundary, its line can be traced from S through W to NNE, indicating a roughly subrectangular enclosure (N-S 100m, E-W >100m). To S of Bishop St., its line is preserved in property boundaries, but to N of the street it survives in the curving axis of an old laneway along which the td. and B. boundaries run. This lane, flanked on either side by high mortared stone walls, probably preserves the old street plan prior to the early 18th C when the Bishop's Palace was constructed (Bence-Jones 1978, 276) and the line of Bishop St. was probably laid out. The interior, which is now occupied by modern properties, is generally flat and contains the site of a possible church (GA029-068002-).   Description

  Within an early ecclesiastical enclosure (GA029-068001-); its position is marked on OS 6-inch maps on S side of Bishop St. Archdall (1786, 197-8) records that the 'remains [of St Jarlath] were preserved at Tuam, in a Chapel called Temple-nafcrin [sic]'. Kelly (1904, 257-8) relates that 'the silver shrine of St. Jarlath' was found in 'the Shrine Church [then] unroofed and in ruin', in 1650, but was lost again in the 19th C (see also Kelly 1901a, 100-2). The site probably continued in use until late medieval times, possibly as a parish church (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 31, also 38, 43, 50), though the 'Abbey of the Scrin' is mentioned in a list of monasteries in 1574 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 369).   Description

  Terraced four-bay three-storey house, built c.1830, remodelled c.1890, having timber shopfront of c.1900 to ground floor. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystack and block cornice with moulded brackets and cast-iron rainwater goods. Painted rendered façade with raised quoins. Square-headed window openings with replacement uPVC windows, first floor having torus mouldings, and first floor having moulded render surrounds with dentils and moulded cornices. Shopfront has foliate scroll brackets to each end of continuous fascia, plate-glass display windows and recess double entrance having timber gate. Replacement timber door to house with plain overlight.

  Description

  Entrance gateway, built c.1830, to Presentation Convent. Screen wall of pecked ashlar limestone having plinths, string course and English crenellations. Segmental carriage arch to centre flanked by elliptical-headed pedestrian openings, with wrought-iron gate to carriage arch and timber battened doors to pedestrian openings.

  Description

  Mid-row four-bay three-storey house, probably formerly two houses, built c.1810. Pitched slate roof with block cornice, rendered coursed rubble limestone chimneystacks, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Ruled and line rendered façade with raised quoins. Square-headed window openings. Replacement uPVC tripartite window to east end of ground floor. Other windows are original timber sliding sash, six-over-six pane to lower floors and three-over-six pane to top floor, with cut limestone sills. Round-headed doorway with glazed timber panelled double-leaf door and leaded petal fanlight.

Hipped slate roof on a T-shaped plan centred on hipped slate roof (south), clay ridge tiles, and cast-iron rainwater goods on dentilated eaves retaining cast-iron downpipes. Part ivy-covered replacement roughcast walls on cut-limestone chamfered cushion course on cement rendered base. Modified segmental-headed central door opening, cut-limestone doorcase with part fluted engaged Doric columns supporting ogee-detailed cornice on rosette-detailed frieze, and monolithic surround framing replacement uPVC casement window having fanlight. Square-headed window openings with cut-limestone sills, and concealed dressings framing replacement uPVC casement windows. Set back from line of street with roughcast boundary wall to perimeter having moss-covered coping.

  Detached five-bay (four-bay deep) three-storey over raised basement townhouse, built 1797, on a square plan; five-bay full-height rear (south) elevation. In alternative use, 1803-13. Adapted to alternative use, 1817. Vacated, 1858. Renovated, ----. Flat topped hipped slate roof with ridge tiles, red brick Running bond chimney stacks having corbelled stepped stringcourses below capping supporting yellow terracotta pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves boards with cast-iron hoppers and downpipes. Part creeper-covered replacement roughcast walls on cement rendered base. Segmental-headed central door opening approached by flight of seven cut-limestone steps, cut-limestone block-and-start surround centred on double keystone framing replacement timber panelled double doors having fanlight. Square-headed window openings with cut-limestone sills, and concealed dressings framing replacement uPVC casement windows. Square-headed central door opening to rear (south) elevation with concealed dressings framing replacement timber panelled double doors having overlight.   Detached three-bay two-storey house, built 1912, on a rectangular plan; three-bay two-storey rear (south) elevation. Hipped slate roof with perforated crested terracotta ridge tiles extending into roll moulded ridge tiles, paired rendered central chimney stacks having stringcourses below capping, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves boards retaining cast-iron downpipes. Rendered walls on rendered plinth with rusticated rendered piers to corners supporting rendered band to eaves. Camber-headed central door opening with concrete step, rendered doorcase with panelled pilasters supporting ogee-detailed pediment centred on double keystone framing timber panelled door having overlight. Camber-headed window openings with cut-limestone sills, and moulded rendered surrounds framing one-over-one timber sash windows. Interior including (ground floor): central hall retaining encaustic tiled floor, carved timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors, staircase on a dog leg plan with turned timber balusters supporting carved timber banister terminating in ball finial-topped turned timber newel, and carved timber surrounds to door openings to landing framing timber panelled doors. Set back from line of street with rendered piers to perimeter having ogee-detailed stringcourses below panelled capping supporting wrought iron gate.

  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1820, over basement, and having shallow entrance breakfront. Hipped slated roof with two chimneystacks grouped near centre of ridge, and gutter set against simple stone fascia. Roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed replacement uPVC windows with limestone sills. Square-headed door opening with original fielded panel door, set into Doric doorcase with tooled columns supporting lintel that extends as moulded string-course for width of breakfront, and with segmental cobweb fanlight. The entrance is approached up flight of six splayed steps and house fronted by low wall with limestone coping and wrought-iron railings.

  Description

  Detached two-storey with basement H-plan Presentation Convent, dated 1848, having eight-bay centre with two-bay entrance breakfront, and single-bay wings, four-bay side elevations, and various later blocks added to rear. Hipped slate roof with replacement rendered chimneystacks, others removed. Painted cement-rendered walls, roughcast rendered to basement, with limestone string course between floors, raised limestone quoins, and limestone base moulding over basement. Breakfront has simple limestone cornice, blocking course and carved limestone cross. Square-headed window openings with limestone sills and replacement uPVC windows. Tripartite limestone doorcase to breakfront comprising square-headed timber panelled door and sidelights with panelled stall risers all flanked by panelled pilasters with curvilinear brackets supporting narrow lintel, set within wide segmental-headed opening with raised block-and-start limestone surround. Limestone plaque to first floor of breakfront records foundation of convent by Archbishop MacHale in 1848. Round-headed doorway to rear having square-headed carved timber door, block-and-start surround and decorative fanlight. Basement area to front of building has cast-iron railings set on single course of limestone and entrance approached by flight of splayed limestone steps. Lawns and mature trees to ground.

  Description

  Single-arch limestone road bridge, dated 1738, over River Nanny, and widened c.1800 to east side. Segmental arch to weast having roughly dressed voussoirs with rubble walls above. Shallower segmental arch to east having cut-stone voussoirs with coursed rubble walls above. Base of soffit reinforced with concrete. Parapet to east has round-profile limestone coping. Large inscribed plaque to inside of west parapet dates bridge to 1738 and relates story of a wager involving the carting of the stone to the site. Label-moulding above stone. Further bridge to west served mill complex.

  Mid-terrace four-bay three-storey house, built c.1800, having shopfront of c.1900 to middle of ground floor and carriage archway to south. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks. Rendered ruled and lined walls with raised render quoins and render plinth. Square-headed windows having two-over-two-pane timber sliding sash windows and painted stone sills. Doorway at north end with render block-and-start surround and timber panelled door with overlight. Timber shopfront comprising double-leaf timber glazed door with paned overlight, flanked by plate-glass display windows with render sills and stall risers, with timber pilasters to ends and flanking openings, with recent timber fascia and frieze.

  End of terrace four-bay three-storey building, built c.1900, comprising two two-bay buildings, one now in use as shop and other as public house, having shared pedimented carriage archway to centre flanked by pedestrian doorways, latter flanked in turn by shopfronts. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks, one being over centre of front elevation and with slightly projecting chimneybreast. Rendered walls to upper floors with raised render quoins and render sill courses and moulded render eaves course. Ground floor of ashlar limestone with plinth. Square-headed double window openings with one-over-one pane timber sliding sash frames and painted sills. Recessed shop entrances flanked by plate-glass display windows having recent lettering to fascias. Continuous shopfront comprises moulded render cornice and fascia with render consoles to ends of elevation and to pediment of carriage archway.
