• GA048-008001 Midden
  Description

  To SW of a similar, if not associated, midden complex (GA035-024----). An extensive series of middens and habitation sites which extend for c.2km along the coast between Doonloughan Bay, to S, and Knock headland to N. Composed mainly of shells, including periwinkle, whelk, limpet and cockle, but quantities of animal bones are also in evidence (pers. comm. F. Mc Cormick). A number of huts (GA048-008002-), stone walls, enclosures and burials (GA048-008009-) are associated with the middens. A number of stray finds have been recovered over the years. A sample taken in 1988 has produced a calibrated 14C determination of between AD 700-900 (pers. comm. M. Gibbons).   Description

  Within an extensive complex of middens (GA048-008001-). The remains consist of at least two circular, and one square, huts defined by a loose scatter of boulders: (a) close to NE part of Doonloughan Bay is a square hut (L/Wth 4.4m) enclosed by a rectangular annexe to N (L 6.4m, Wth 4.4m); (b) close to S end of False Bay there is at least one circular example (D c. 3m) containing a centrally placed hearth and doorway at E; (c) at S limits of midden complex is a hut which survives as an irregular spread of boulders (D c. 25m). Gibbons et al. (1988, 66) have since noted the existence of at least five huts in this area.   Description

  Associated with an extensive series of middens (GA048-008001-). A number of burials were exposed by shifting sands in the vicinity of False Bay in early 1980s. One extended adult inhumation and a child's skeleton were reported, and a stone setting was noted around one grave. One report mentions 'a cemetery of similar graves' nearby (Topgr.   Description

  In an area of marsh and reed swamp to W of Loch Trosca, and perhaps once formerly part of it. Poorly preserved low circular platform (D c. 20m) defined by much collapsed and subsided drystone wall. The siting and morphology display affinities with an island cashel. A number of other, more irregular, enclosures, heavily obscured by bog myrtle, lie off to NE on other patches of relatively dry land. (Topgr.
