• GA103-190 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  In pastureland, c. 150m to the E of Tyrone Bay. Poorly preserved roughly circular cashel (diam. 32.2m) defined by a collapsed grassed-over drystone wall (base Wth 4.6m; Wth at top 1.3m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.7m). From SE to S a field wall and water trough overlie the enclosing element. • GA103-193 Cairn - burial cairn
  Description

  On a slight rise in farmland. This roughly circular flat-topped cairn (base diam. c. 9m; top 5m; H c. 1.25m) is built of grassed-over stones. According to the landowner, it is ‘modern’ but it covers four stone slabs. McCaffrey (1952, 19, no. 32a) noted that in a depression (L c. 3m; Wth 1.8m; D 0.8m) in its centre, a stone (L 1.2m; H 0.7m) set on edge was indicative of the ‘remains of a plundered cist or chamber’. • GA103-194 Enclosure
  Description

  On a low headland on the E shore of Tyrone Bay. Aerial reconnaissance in October 1984 (ASGAP 181:74-5) revealed a large oval enclosure (72m N-S; 55m E-W) which is defined by a low wide grassed-over stony bank. The interior is subdivided by a grassed-over stone wall running NE-SW. Some 16m from its SW end, a gap (Wth 2m) is evident. Another bank runs from the SW side of the gap, in a NW direction. The foundations of a rectangular house site (GA103-194001-) abut the W side of the dividing wall, immediately to the N of the gap. Traces of another dividing wall extend from the NW corner of the house; it runs NE towards the enclosing element. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 16 July 2019

• Tyrone, stables, 1770–1790 · Regional interest
  Description

  Stable yard having single-storey and two-storey outbuildings, built c.1780, comprising three-bay two-storey carriage house to west range, three-bay single-storey stables to east range, and multiple-bay single-storey outbuildings to north-west and north ranges. Now roofless. Carriage house has rubble limestone walls, with oculus window openings to first floor having tooled surrounds. Central round-headed door opening having tooled Gibbsian surround. Square-headed carriage openings having segmental relieving arches with cut-stone voussoirs, and cut-stone surrounds with recessed panels to lintels. Single-storey stables having pitched slate roof, dressed limestone walls, square-headed door openings having tooled stone surrounds similar to two-storey block, and timber double half-doors. Multiple-bay block has remnants of pitched slate roof, roughcast rendered walls, and square-headed openings. Remains of rubble stone walls enclosing yard, and to walled garden to east.

  Description

  Detached seven-bay three-storey over basement country house, built 1779, having three-bay entrance breakfront with distyle Ionic portico to front (south) elevation, and four-bay side elevations. Now roofless and partly ruinous, with moulded limestone cornice. Cut limestone walls having tooled chamfered rusticated quoins. Breakfront has Venetian-style window openings to upper floors, with pilasters, moulded cornices and having quoined surrounds to openings. Top floor has Diocletian window above cornice, moulded archivolt with triple fluted keystone, fluting to pilasters, and moulded sill course with fluted brackets in line with pilasters. First floor has round-headed opening with voussoirs, archivolt with raised voussoirs and fluted triple keystone, pilasters with moulded bases and fluted capitals, triglyphs to friezes, and dentillations to cornices. Square-headed window openings elsewhere to front elevation, having carved lugged surrounds, first floor having friezes with triglyphs, and dentillated cornices, and ground floor having alternating triangular and segmental pediments, all with cut-stone sills. Moulded surrounds to side elevations. Entrance comprises three-bay carved limestone centrepiece having square-headed doorway with fanlight and flanked by square-headed windows with round-headed niches over, openings having moulded lintels, fanlight and niches having moulded archivolts with scroll keystones, ends of centrepiece having Ionic pilasters, and doorway being fronted by Ionic portico, the whole having dentillated cornice and pulvinated friezes.
