• KE091-077 Children's burial ground
  Description

  Killeen Burial Ground: Situated on the summit of a rise in boggy pasture, this enclosed site is located a short distance W of the Ardsheelhane river. It is noted as a burial place for children in the OSNB (Kilcrohane, 33). It abuts a field boundary on its S side and is enclosed elsewhere by a low bank of earth and stone, revetted with drystone masonry. The bank is lm high and lm wide, and it encloses a D-shaped area which measures 11m N-S x 10m E-W. This is raised above external ground level and contains a dense scattering of loose stone and a number of upright grave-markers, averaging .3m high, many of which are arranged in N-S rows. A gap in the boundary at S is flanked by a pair of upright slabs. The above description is derived from O'Sullivan, A. and Sheehan, J. • KE091-078 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  This site is located on a low rise in boggy pasture on the W side of the Ardsheelhane river valley. It is marked on the second edition of the OS map as a small univallate enclosure, and consists of an overgrown sub-circular area, 5.2m N-S x 6.5m E-W, which is enclosed by a fosse and an external bank. Access to the interior is provided by a narrow causeway, 2.3m wide, which crosses the fosse at NE. The entrance gap through the bank is defined by two slabs set on edge. The bank survives best at S, where it measures 1.5m high externally and rises to a maximum height of .85m above the flat-bottomed, 1.2m wide, fosse. The above description is derived from A. • KE091-107 Souterrain
  Description

  Not marked on the OS maps, this souterrain is located on top of a low rise in an area of rough pasture, c. 200m W of the Ardsheelhane river. Access is gained through a modern opening close to the W end of a lintelled passage with sides of earth. Aligned E-W, the passage measures at least 2.7m long, 1.6m high and .6m wide. The W end narrows in width and is blocked by collapse. At its E end an earth-tunnelled creepway, .75m high x .5m wide, leads into a subrectangular tunnelled chamber which measures 2.45m NE-SW x 1.7m wide. Its roof is 1m high and there is much collapsed earth on its floor. A .8m long area of drystone facing occurs in the SE wall of the chamber. A creepway, .4m high x .55m wide, leads from the SW end of the chamber into a second earth-tunnelled chamber whose longer axis is orientated E-W; this measures 2.3m long, 1.85m wide and 1.05m high. Adjacent to the creepway is an area of drystone facing, .8m long, similar to that in the adjoining end of the first chamber. These presumably represent blockings of the points from where the chambers were tunnelled out from the base of an adjoining construction shaft. The above description is derived from A.
