  Description

  See linked document with details from Ruaidhrí de Valera and Seán Ó Nualláin, Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland. Volume IV. Counties Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary. (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1982) Cuppage (1986, 20-6, no. 25 (a)) records that 'three of the stones of the gallery bear rock art designs.' These designs include a single cup-and-circle, twelve shallow cup-marks, two possible cup-marks and a penannular circle. These are shown in Cuppage (ibid., fig. 13b). The 'Gallaun' indicated on the 1st and 2nd ed. OS 6-inch maps to the SW of this wedge tomb is probably the one that is noted by Cuppage (ibid.) as a 'single outer-wall stone [which] stands at the W end of the S side [of the wedge tomb]'; this is also noted by O'Nuallain (1982, 55, fig. 20).   Standing stone described by Cuppage (1986, 24, no. 25 (b) ) as 'Located c. 60 to 70m N of the wedge-tomb [KE035-073001-], and c. 85m S of another standing stone [KE035-073003-], this is a thin, gable-shaped stone standing 1.2m high and measuring 1.95m wide x 0.35 to 0.44m thick at base; NW-SE. Two possible cup-marks are visible on its SW face. (Fig. 15)'.

  Hut site described by Cuppage (1986, 24, no. 25 (d)) as ; 'Located close to the E bank of the river, this roughly oval, drystone-built hut measures 5.3m E-W x 3.5m N-S internally, and its roughly-constructed wall stands to a maximum height of 1.2m. A c. 1m wide gap at SW probably represents the original entrance, but there is also a 0.7m wide gap at ENE'.

  Description

  Hut site described by Cuppage (1986, 24, no. 25 (e)) as; 'A circular drystone-built foundation situated just below the summit of the hillock on which the wedge-tomb stands. It measures 3.8m in diameter internally and the wall, 1.5m thick, stands to a maximum height of 0.4m but is largely obscured by collapse. It is not clear where the original entrance lay. The N part of the wall is overlain by a later wall which appears to form part of a small rectangular enclosure surrounding the hut'.

  Description

  Hut site described by Cuppage (1986, 24, no. 25 (f)) as; 'The foundations of this oval hut have been exposed to a height of 0.2m by turf-cutting, but the W part of the outline remains buried beneath 0.3m of uncut peat. It measures 5.5m SW-NE x 5.2m NW-SE internally, and the wall, constructed of a double face of low boulders with a rubble core of smaller stones, is 1.1m thick. A 1m depth of peat remains in the interior of the hut but outside the peat is only 0.3 to 0.5m deep, perhaps indicating that the interior was originally slightly hollowed out of the ground'.

  Description

  Hut site described by Cuppage (1986, 24, no. 25 (g)) as; 'This circular hut is incorporated into one of the pre-bog field walls running E-W on the E side of the river. It measures 3m in diameter internally but the NW section of the wall is largely destroyed. Elsewhere the wall stands to a maximum height of 0.6m above the thin peat cover and is constructed of 3 to 4 courses of large boulders'.

  Fulacht fia described by Cuppage (1986, 24, no. 25 (i)) as; 'Located on the E bank of the river, this horseshoe-shaped mound has been cut away along its WNW side by the river and there is a drop here of c. 2m to the level of the water. A holly tree has also caused some disturbance at the W end of the mound which measures 11m NE-SW x c. 7.3m NW-SE x 1.25m in maximum height. It is composed of a combination of black soil and fragments of burnt stone. The depression at the NE side measures 2.4m x 2.4m, and a large flag partly exposed at its E side may have formed part of a revetment, as may the earthfast boulders a short distance to NE. The wall running N from the mound marks the boundary between the townlands of Ballyhoneen and Kilmore; elsewhere this boundary follows the centre of the river'.

  Fulacht fia described by Cuppage (1986, 24, no. 25 (i)) as; 'An irregular, but vaguely kidney-shaped, grass-grown mound of burnt and fire-shattered stones measuring 12.4m NW-SE x 1.75m in maximum height. The depression at its WSW side appears to have been revetted with stones, some of which stand upright and some of which have now collapsed'.

  Rectangular enclosure described by Cuppage (1986, 24, no. 25 (e) ) as; 'N part of the wall [of the hut site KE035-073005-) is overlain by a later wall which appears to form part of a small rectangular enclosure surrounding the hut'.

• KE035-075 Enclosure
  Description

  This site is located in an elevated position on the rough, wet, rocky lower slopes of Slievenagower, overlooking Lough Adoon and the valley of the Scorid river to W. The present structure is related to sheep farming in the area, being comprised of a semi-circular enclosure, 30m in diameter and open along its E side, within which are a number of pens and shelters in fairly good condition. The enclosing wall is up to 1.5m high and abuts the S side of a disused E-W field wall, the relationship between the two being obscured by collapse. There is some evidence that the present enclosure wall was built on top of a more substantial wall which may relate to an earlier, possibly circular, enclosure. The final c. 8m of the enclosure wall at N is only .3m high but is 1.8m wide in contrast to an average width elsewhere of about .9m. The wall then gradually increases in height and decreases in width, but to NW, for a distance of 6m, the present wall stands on top of what appears to be a continuation of the wider section. The earlier wall is not discernible internally at NW, but externally it is 1m high and protrudes .4m beyond the base of the later wall, indicating a wall thickness of c. 1.4m. Its lower courses are constructed with considerably larger stones than those used in the remainder of the wall. Where the later wall ends at E, its curving outline is continued around the SE sector of the site by a line of horizontally-laid large flags which may also relate to an earlier enclosure. • KE035-077 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  Dooneen Island is located in the middle of Lough Adoon, a corrie lake cut deep into the N side of the Ballysitteragh-Beenoskee mountain range and surrounded to E, W and S by steep precipices up to 1600 feet/488m high. The island is easily accessible from the E where only a shallow stretch of water, 30m wide and no more than .4m deep, separates it from the mainland. On this E side the island is defended by a drystone wall set back a maximum of 3.5m from the waters edge. Following the natural curve of the shore line, the wall extends for about 50m and runs out into the water at either end. Though collapsed at its N and S ends, the wall is, for the most part, well preserved, being a maximum of 2m high and an average of 2.5m wide. The centrally-placed entrance is c. 1.4m wide. About 8m N of the entrance is a small roughly-constructed recess which is possibly not an original feature of the site. For a distance of 6m to N of this the wall-footing projects an average of .25m beyond the inner wall face. The wall may have continued for a short distance along the S side of the island, since a short stretch of wall-facing, 1m long and .4m high, is visible here.   Description

  In mountain heath (97m OD), on a W-facing slope, overlooking Lough Adoon to E. Good views of Brandon Mountain range to NW. A slightly rough and unfractured, earthfast sandstone (dims. 1.10m E-W; 0.55m N-S) which has an overhang that protrudes outwards from the hillslope; flakey surface to W side. The decorated surface (dims. 0.25m E-W; 0.15m N-S) is SSE-facing and bears two very faint, yet traceable cup-and-ring motifs which are conjoined. Cup-and-ring motif (overall diam. 12cm; ring Wth 2.5-3cm; D 2-3mm; cup diam. 3.5cm; D 3mm) at W, is the best defined. The second cup-and-ring motif (overall dims. 13cm x 10cm; ring Wth 2cm; D 2-3mm) at E has a very faint cupmark.   Description

  In mountain heath (167m OD), on a SSW-facing slope, with commanding views over Lough Adoon S->W->NW. A smooth and unfractured sandstone boulder (dims. 1.85m ENE-WSW; 1.10m NNW-SSE; H 0.45m) which is irregular in plan and protrudes from hillside with a slight overhang at WSW. It has a generally level decorated surface (dims. 0.5m ENE-WSW; 0.5m NNW-SSE) which has a very slight W-facing aspect toward Lough Adoon. The decorative elements are faint due to weathering in this exposed location. A small cup-and-ring motif (overall diam. 7.5cm; ring Wth 1.5cm; ring D 2-3mm; cup diam. 2.5-3cm; cup D 7mm) is located centrally upon the decorated surface. A small heart-shaped ring (dims. 6cm x 7cm; ring Wth 1cm; ring D 3mm) is adjacent to NW. A minimum of four cupmarks ranging from the smallest (diam. 2.5cm; D 3mm) to the largest (diam. 5cm; D 8mm) are located to E, SE and SW. A cluster (dims. 5cm; 4.5cm E-W) of approximately twelve pickmarks (diam. 3mm; D 1-1.5mm) is further to NW. Rock art (KE035-119----) is c. 90.5m to SW.
