• KE065-022 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Internal diam. 32m E-W Lissaphhuca/ Lios an Phúca: Located in pastureland which slopes down gently N to the Laune river, this bivallate rath affords broad views in all directions. Its N half has been much disturbed, and the site is planted with pine trees. The outer bank is preserved up to 2.6m high externally and has an average basal width of 4m; its inner face is degraded at NW. It falls about 1.6m to the base of a flat-bottomed, 4m wide fosse, above which the crest of the inner bank rises 3m. The latter is almost flush with the level of the featureless interior. • KE065-022001 Souterrain
  Description

  This souterrain was excavated in the early 1990s (Connolly 1992, 20-38) following its discovery during the digging of house foundations within a small housing estate. It consists of two stone-built chambers connected by a short stone-built creepway. Chamber 1 (4.55m NW-SE; 1.7m NE-SW; H 1.63m) has a distinct inward batter and its SE end is corbelled. It was roofed with six stone lintels (average dims: 0.59m x 1.25m x 0.17m), four of which were in situ and two of which lay on the ground beside the souterrain at the time of the excavation. Chamber 2 also has a distinct inward batter and is roofed with lintels. An opening (Wth 0.48m; H 0.43m) in the NW end of Chamber 1 and another (Wth 0.42m; H 0.49m) at the S end of Chamber 2 lead into the creepway (1.1m N-S) which is roofed by three flat lintels. Further investigations in 1995, prior to the resealing of the souterrain, identified an unroofed steeply rising entrance passage (L 1.48m; Wth 1m) at the N end of chamber 2 (3.22m N-S; c. 1.35m E-W; H 1.57m) (Connolly 1996, 39-40). A tanged iron sickle, of early medieval date, was found inserted between two stones of the side-wall in the entrance passage (Connolly 1992, 25-34). • KE065-118 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Lewis records that Beaufort House, which is located on the W bank of the River Laune, was built on the site of a structure known as Short Castle (1837, 237). No remains of an earlier building are now apparent in the fabric of this eighteenth-century house, though Bary notes that it is built over a partial basement which is reputed to be the foundations of the castle (1994, 46). The site may be that referred to by Smith in this general location as 'a small ruined castle, erected in the wars of 1641, by one Captain Sullivan, as a place of defence' (1756, 145). • KE065-125 Bridge
  Description

  A road bridge (Wth 7.8m) spanning the River Laune on a N-S axis. A multiperiod bridge of random rubble sandstone. The arches have shaped voussoirs and there are slight variations in the heights and spans. There are four segmental arches (span c. 6m) on the S side with low pointed cutwaters on the upstream side of the piers. A narrow arch at N links to five inserted central arches (span c. 5m) with cut-stone rounded cutwaters on the upstream side of the piers; there are three sloping butresses on the downstream side. There are two segmental arches at the N end with a low pointed cutwater on the upstream side of the pier. The northernmost arch has rockface rusticated voussoirs. There is an overflow arch on the S bank. The much rebuilt parapet wall has vertical stone coping in places. There are a number of iron braces through the bridge at the N end. According to local information, stone used for the building of this bridge was taken from Pallis Castle (KE065-019----). • KE065-127 Ogham stone (present location)
  Description

  Standing beside a woodland path on the W bank of the Laune River to the SE of Beaufort House. This is the present location of an ogham stone found near Camp (KE036-083----), on the Dingle peninsula, about the middle of the 19th century. It stands 1.25m high and is .48m wide x .2m thick and is currently orientated NS. A perforation near the top of the stone suggests that it may at one time have functioned as a gatepost. The surface of the stone is very rough and the inscription, particularly the vowels, is not easy to read. Macalister (1945, 169, no. 177) interpreted it as: CCILARI AV(I) ....COI VAG... Traces of a 2nd inscription are discernible near the top of one of the opposite angles. The letters ANI remain. • KE065-136 Kiln - corn-drying
  Description

  This possible corn-drying kiln was discovered during licensed archaeological test trenching (16E0136). At the end of a trench a small portion of in-situ burning was identified and the trench was expanded to expose an area 5.2m x 4.9m. The burnt deposit extended south and presented as a kiln, 4.9m in overall length. The probable chamber of this kiln was at the northern end, 2.2m east-west x 2m. A linear deposit, representing the flue, extended from the southwestern part of the chamber where a large stone (0.55m x 0.37m) appeared to define the ‘neck’. This flue was 2.9m in length, 0.96m wide at the north end it narrowed to 0.6m before splaying out to 1.35m in width. At the southern end, the mouth of the kiln was filled with mid brown stony silt with charcoal flecks (1.9m x 1.35m). Where the flue narrowed, a concentration of charcoal and silt was evident (0.6m x 0.5m). Brown stony silt with charcoal flecks formed the upper fill of the remainder. The chamber area had been slightly truncated at the northern end and suggested a stone-lining of rounded cobbles over which a layer of charcoal was deposited, 0.1m in thickness. The natural subsoil beneath these layers had been reddened by heat. The same charcoal and heat-effected natural subsoil was evident along the eastern edge of the chamber. The evidence of intense burning, stone-lining and overall shape suggest that this is a key-hole shaped corn-drying kiln. Two possible stake-holes were found 1.65m to the east of the kiln, 1.4m apart and contained dark charcoal stained soil. On the western side of the kiln, a sub-rectangular deposit of greyish brown silt and stone measured 1m north-south x 0.66m. This was just 0.3m from the kiln edge.   Description

  Eight-arch rubble stone road bridge over river, built c. 1825, with U- and V-cutwaters and buttresses. Rubble parapets with stone-on-edge coping, coping replaced with cement in places, drainage slots at bases of parapets. Round-headed arches with rubble voussoirs. Bridge spans two townlands.

• Beaufort House, country house, 1847–1853 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay (three-bay deep) two-storey over part basement country house, c.1850, on a U-shaped plan centred on prostyle tetrastyle portico to ground floor. Hipped slate roof on a U-shaped plan centred on pitched slate roof (west), roll moulded ridge tiles, paired rendered central chimney stacks on rendered bases having corbelled stepped capping supporting yellow terracotta octagonal pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on overhanging eaves on moulded rendered cornice with cast-iron downpipes. Rendered, ruled and lined walls on cut-limestone chamfered plinth. Square-headed central door opening behind prostyle tetrastyle portico approached by flight of three cut-limestone steps with cut-limestone columns on plinths having responsive pilasters supporting ogee-detailed cornice on frieze on architrave below blocking course, and moulded rendered surround framing glazed timber panelled door. Square-headed central window opening in bipartite arrangement (first floor) with cut-limestone sill, timber mullion, and concealed dressings framing timber casement windows. Square-headed window openings with cut-limestone sills, and concealed dressings framing nine-over-nine (ground floor) or six-over-six (first floor) timber sash windows. Set in landscaped grounds with limestone ashlar piers to perimeter having ogee-detailed cornices on friezes on stringcourses below monolithic capping supporting wrought iron double gates. NOTE: The eighteenth-century Beaufort House was occupied by the Honourable Reverend Frederick Ferriter Mullins (1778-1832) and was later described by Samuel Lewis (1837) as 'the residence of Frederick Wm. Mullins [1804-54] built on the site of Short Castle' (Lewis 1837 II, 237): there are no obvious remains of Short Castle which was described by Charles Smith (1756) as 'a small ruined castle erected in the wars of 1641 by one Captain Sullivan as a place of defence' (Smith 1756, 145). Beaufort House was purchased (1847) by Reverend John Robert Fitzgerald Day (1797-1881) whose last Will (29th June 1868) makes reference to 'trust funds...expended in the purchase in the Landed Estates Court of the lands of Beaufort and in rebuilding a Mansion House thereon': the extent of the 'rebuilding' is uncertain but most likely included the pillared portico and polygonal bows. Beaufort House was inherited (1881) by Robert John Fitzgerald Day (1841-83) and was later occupied (1901) by Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Nash (1851-1931) and (1911) by Frank Chapman Scargill (1836-1919) of Cloongee House in County Mayo (see 31306008).
