  Description

  See field inspection report (diary NF6, 40-1) (SMR file). According to the report this enclosure was shown on the 1846 ed. OSi 6-inch map, but by the 2nd edition (1892), it had been levelled. There is now no visible surface trace of the enclosure. Small circular-shaped earthwork intersected at N by a field boundary running E-W on 1841 ed. OSi 6-inch map. • KE038-012 Barrow - unclassified
  Description

  See field inspection report (diary NF6, 36-7) (SMR file). According to the report, this is a levelled earthwork identified on aerial photographs (Hunting Surveys Ltd. 1:10,000 8131/8132) taken 1962 and on Irish Air Corps aerial photographs (V.163/49) taken 10/05/1949. Situated on the lower foothills of the Slieve Mish mountains, this partially destroyed barrow commands a dominant view from east through north to west. The field in which this site is located has recently been planted with deciduous forest, thereby almost completely obliterating the east and west elements of the barrow. It is described in the RMP manual as fulacht fiadh, however this was probably misidentified because of the large amount of scattered red sandstone which occurs on the almost scree-like slope. The central platform is still visible, although much denuded, and measures 13.0m N-S. An accurate E-W measurement cannot be gauged as only a 4.0m wide strip has been left untouched, and the use of this strip as an access way has substantially flattened the barrow itself. In its present state the surrounding fosse is 3.50m wide, 0.30m below the top of the central platform and 0.35m below the top of the enclosing bank. This bank is approximately 4.0m in width and is 0.40m above external ground level. No trace of burning or burnt stone could be found to indicate that there was a fulacht fiadh in this area (Connolly 1996). • KE038-072 Hut site
  Description

  This site is situated on the summit of Knockmoyle Mountain, approximately 1km west of sites 24 and 25, above. The site offers similarly expansive views of the Lee and Maine Valleys but does appear to have more of a focus toward the two cairns described above, which can clearly be seen to the east. Knockmoyle and Knockawaddra mountains occupy either side of the highest point of Scotia's Glen, the main pass through the western end of the Slieve Mish. The cairn has been heavily damaged and robbed stone has been used to construct numerous sheepfolds on and around the site. The cairn appears to have been circular with a diameter of 20m and it still remains to a height of 1.5m on its western side. There is, possibly a second cairn 7m to the north of the main example. This low cairn measures 8m N-S and 10m E-W, with an extant height of 0.8m. However, it should be noted that this may be the result of sheepfold construction and the removal of stone from the main site. The RMP records both a hut site complex KE038-071---- and a single hut site KE038-072---- in this area on the summit of Knockmoyle. These sites were not recorded on the old SMR and only occur on the 1997 RMP update. They were probably identified from aerial photography and are undoubtedly the sheepfolds constructed with material from the cairn described above. • KE038-103 Cairn - unclassified
  Description

  'The cairn is situated on a craggy eminence to the west of the summit of Knockawaddra mountain at the eastern end of the Slieve Mish. The site affords expansive views of the Lee Valley, Tralee Bay and the Stacks mountains, to the north, north-east and north-west. To the south the Maine Valley, Castlemaine Harbour and the MacGillycuddy Reeks can be seen. The cairn measures 10m N-S and 10m E-W and is substantially covered in peat, except for some areas on the northern side (cairn may be larger but only removal of peat would clarify this). The cairn remains to a height of 1.68m on its northern side but is considerably lower to the south, where it appears that the cairn has almost been constructed up against an existing crag. There is some evidence for a revetment on the northern side and the cairn itself is composed of red sandstone slabs and boulders up to 0.5m in length.'   Description

  'This site is situated around 300m to the east of [KE038-103----].............and offers similarly panoramic views of the valleys on either side of the Slieve Mish. Both cairns are clearly visible from one another and stand on either side of a low saddle near the summit of Knockawaddra mountain. This cairn is larger and more impressive, measuring 21m N-S and 26m E-W, with a very domed profile. The cairn remains to a maximum height of 3.15m and is, again, almost completely covered in peat. Where the peat covering has been partly removed, due to collapse of the underlying cairn, on the southern side, the cairn can be seen to be constructed of similar large red sandstone slabs and boulders to LVS038 024. One of the small stone cairns, which serve as townland boundaries has been erected on the site.' • KE038-105 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  'This barrow is to be found on top of a low spur of limestone outcrop in an area of marginal land at the lowest foothills of the Slieve Mish mountains. The site affords panoramic views from north through west to south. This barrow has been partially denuded and consists of a low bank and internal ditch enclosing a low central mound. The enclosing bank is 6.00m in width and has an external height of 0.50m. The ditch has an average width of 3.00m and is 0.30m below the top of the bank. The central platform is sub-circular and measures 10.0m E-W by 8.00m N-S and is 0.30m above the level of the ditch. The bank appears to be constructed of a mixture of earth and stone. • KE038-122 Barrow - unclassified
  Description

  'This unusual feature located on the western side of the Finglas River, near the head of Scotia’s Glen, seems to be partially cut by the river on its south - south-eastern side. The site affords spectacular views down the glen to the south. The site consists of a bank with internal ditch and traces of an external ditch with a central platform or raised area. The bank is composed of earth and stone and is visible on the northern, southern and western sides of the site. It is 0.47m high both internally and externally and 2.1m wide. The inner ditch is again clearly visible except on the eastern side. It is flat bottomed, 0.50m in depth and 1.7m wide. The external ditch is less clear but can be traced on the western and southern sides. It appears to be 0.25m deep and 1.2-1.5m wide. The inner platform area is circular, 6.4m in diameter and 0.54m high, with a central depression measuring 1.7m by 1m and 0.22m deep. • KE038-123 House - Neolithic
  Description

  Monitoring of a house construction project by Jacinta Kiely in the townland of Cloghers on the southern side of the River Lee and Tralee town was divided into six phases. Licensed monitoring (98E0238) of Phases V and VI was undertaken in June 1998 and extensive archaeological stratigraphy was recorded during the monitoring of Phase VI. An area of burnt stratigraphy lay on the northern side of a limestone reef, which forms the south- western boundary of the site. An area 12m north-south by 27m was excavated. A Neolithic house was uncovered in the western section of the trench. A series of pits and stake-holes was found in the eastern section of the trench. The archaeology was truncated by a series of cultivation furrows aligned north-south. They were c. 2m apart, 1-1.5m wide and 0.2m deep. There were five pits and a number of stake-holes in the area to the east of the Neolithic house. A small faunal assemblage was recovered from the deepest of the pits. To date, the bones of cow and small perching birds have been identified. The rectangular Neolithic structure measures 7.5m north-south by 12.5m. It is orientated east- west, with a possible entrance to the east. The bedrock in the north-western corner is high, and the line of the structure is incomplete in this area. The remains suggests that the walls of the structure, including the two internal divisions, were constructed with vertical split planks set in bedding trenches, supported by corner posts and intermittent posts located on the line of the walls. Sherds of pottery,fragments of polished mudstone axes, burnt hazelnut shells, mudstone scrapers and flint were recovered from some of the substantial post-holes. The eastern and central room of the structure is 3.5m wide; the western room is 4m wide. No hearth had survived. A fence line lies 0.8m to the south of the southern wall of the structure. It was constructed of small stakes set within a wider bedding trench. An extensive soil sieving programme at the site led to the recovery of cereal grains, with the species so far identified consisting of breadwheat, barley, oats and possibly spelt wheat. Interestingly, the typical Neolithic wheats, emmer and einkorn, have not been identified. Other plant remains included wood charcoal and hazelnut shells. A total of 190 animal bones were also recovered from the site. The occurred in a number of cut features but the majority were recovered from a pit interpreted as a cooking pit. The bones were very fragmentary and exhibited evidence of having been in contact with fire. All the identifiable fragments were from cattle and sheep. Some bone from a probable hare was also recovered, as were three bone fragments from small perching birds. A total of 125 pottery sherds consisting of 9 rim sherds, 2 rim sherd fragments, 3 shoulder sherds, 45 body sherds and 66 fragments, as well as some lumps of baked clay, were found in association with the house. It was estimated that a minimum of 10 vessels were represented. The sherds represent a homogenous assemblage consisting of round bottomed, modestly carinated bowls with simple out-turned rims, typical of 'Western' Neolithic type pottery. Only one sherd was decorated with a simple, lightly incised horizontal line (Helen Roche). The excavator interprets the presence of lumps of baked clay, as evidence of pottery manufacture on site. An assemblage of 350 pieces of worked stone was recovered and examined. Over half of the assemblage consisted of greenstone with flint, quartz (mainly rock crystal), chert and mudstone making up the remainder. The final stages of axe production, as well as the reuse of polished axes is documented at the site, while it appears that several of the larger greenstone blades were probably used as cutting tools. The flint assemblage is based on the exploitation of small beach pebbles, while there are three retouched pieces: a bifacially retouched leaf shaped arrowhead fragment and two distal end scrapers on primary flakes. The quartz rock crystal assemblage suggests the production of a series of small flakes by hard hammer and bipolar reduction. The other materials are represented solely by debitage. Several refits were made in the greenstone and quartz, while extensive sieving recovered small fraction debitage indicating the reduction of all materials on site. The excavator suggests that the evidence for axe production and reuse differentiates the Cloghers assemblage from the assemblages recovered at most Neolithic houses excavated in the south.While it is thought that the Cloghers material finds greatest parallel within the Lough Gur assemblages, sharing a similar pattern of raw material exploitation and the presence of greenstone axes (Jacinta Kiely pers. com.). The radiocarbon dates from the Neolithic house at Cloghers were both taken from hazelnut shells recovered from wall features of the house and both shell groups were found in association with 'Western' Neolithic type pottery.   Description

  'Located in a marshy field in the foothills of the Slieve Mish mountains are at least five s, with the possibility that about about a dozen more mounds which occur in the field, although less well defined, may also be sites of this type. The field in which they occur is very wet and in all likelihood is prone to flooding in winter. Only the five most obvious ones were recorded. All were distinctive grass-covered mounds, which contain burnt stone and blackened soil. A small stream, which is a tributary of the River Lee, defines the western boundary of the field in which these sites occur.........in the south west corner of the field is an almost circular mound with a trough area which opens to the south west. Total dimensions of the mound are10.0m N/S by 12.0m E/W and is 0.50m above external ground level. The trough area is now overgrown with reeds and measures 4.00m NE/SW by 3.00m NW/SE and is 0.35m below the top of the mound.' A modern concrete fence post now occupies the centre of the trough area, which is now water filled and is 0.30m below the crest of the mound.' • KE038-128 Hut site
  Description

  'Located on the steeply sloping western side of Scotia’s Glen, overlooking the Finglas River, this group of three stone hut sites provide good views down the glen to the south and to the north, however views to the east and west are limited by the stttep sides of the glen. The sites are located on a narrow scarp and all three remain only as crude foundations built of large stones of red sandstone, with the down-slope (eastern) side of each hut being heavily buttressed by stones piled in against the slope of the ground. The more northerly hut [038-128----] is circular, 2.4m in internal diameter, the stone wall remaining to a height of 0.42n and a width of 0.7m. There are no clear wall courses and no evidence for an entrance. The middle hut [KE038-129----] is the smallest, being only 2m in internal diameter, the wall remaining to a height of 0.30m and a width of 0.6m. The more southerly hut [KE038-130----] is sub-rectangular measuring 4.8m N-S and 2.4m E-W, built in the same fashion as the two circular examples, the wall remaining to a height of 0.45m and a width of 0.72m. • KE038-166 Burnt spread
  Description

  'An archaeological impact assessment and test trenching report requested under the Planning Acts in respect of lands at Clahane, Tralee uncovered the remains of a substantial (05E1326:1) and a second smaller burnt spread with associated pit (05E1326:2), while a second oval pit (05E1326:3) measuring 2.11m by 1.36m was noted to the north of these features. The material measured 21m by 17m and was on average 0.25m thick. The burnt spread of shattered stone and charcoal covered an area 2.5m by 1.89m while the associated circular pit measured 1.4m in diameter.'
