- KE065-072 Standing stone
Description
This tall standing stone, not marked on the OS maps, is located at the base of the N foothills of Macgillycuddy's Reeks, in low-lying pasture between the Gaddagh and Laune rivers. Of somewhat irregular elevation, it stands 2.55m high and measures a maximum of 1.3 x .5m at base; NE-SW. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 160. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013
- KE065-073 Standing stone
Description
Not marked on the OS maps, this possible standing stone was located a short distance W of the avenue to Cullenagh House. The land it stood on was reclaimed in the 1950s, and no visible trace of the monument survives. It was a tall slab which stood over six feet (1.8m) high (local information). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 233. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013
- KE065-074 Standing stone
Description
Not marked on the OS maps, this possible standing stone was situated about 150m SSW of KE065-073----. An equally tall upright, it was also removed during land reclamation operations in the 1950s (local information). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 234. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 July 2013
- KE065-075 Souterrain
Description
In 1986 a souterrain, not marked on the OS maps, was discovered in the course of agricultural work on the crest of a low rise overlooking the low-lying land N of Macgillycuddy's Reeks. The accessible section consists of a small chamber and an adjoining creepway. Access to it is gained through an opening in the chamber caused by the removal of one of its roofing slabs. The chamber is roughly pear-shaped in plan, measuring 2.1m E-W x 1.6m N-S and 1.4m high. Its walls are constructed of horizontally laid slabs and some rubble, and are corbelled in their upper courses. Two broad lintels roof the chamber, and a recess, .45m x .35m x .25m deep, is located above the entrance to the creepway. The latter runs to NE for just 1.35m, due to collapse. Its sides are constructed of upright slabs and it is roofed by flat lintels; it averages .5m in width and .35m in height. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 869. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 29 July 2013
- KE065-120 Enclosure
Description
A subcircular area outlined by a field boundary is marked on the second edition of the OS map at this location. All of the small fields in this area have now been amalgamated into larger fields. No trace survives of this possible enclosure, and its status must therefore remain uncertain. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 800. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 29 July 2013
