  Description

  This earthfast boulder is located on the W edge of a knoll on the lower E slopes of River Hill, on the W side of the Ardsheelhane river valley. It is situated in an area of rock outcrop and scree, and measures 1.35m x .7m. The decorative motifs are confined to its NE end and consist of two cup-and-rings, a penannular ring, a cupmark and a few small pockmarks. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. On the summit of a low rise, the very poorly preserved foundations of a subcircular hut and, 4m to W, an inaccessible souterrain. D: 6.8m x 6.4m. H: .4m. T: .8m. • KE091-050 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Not marked on the OS maps, this subcircular enclosure and souterrain are located on the summit of a low hillock on the S side of River Hill, a short distance W of the Ardsheelhane river. The enclosure is poorly preserved and measures 18.5m N-S x 21m E-W internally. The enclosing element is ruined and overgrown and survives best along its W sector, where a short stretch of rough stone facing is visible. It survives for much of the remainder of its circuit as a collapsed stony spread. The wall has a maximum height of .9m at W and is on average 1m wide. The entrance to the souterrain (KE091-050001-) is centrally located in the raised interior of the enclosure. It measures .6m x .5m and gives access to a lintelled passage, 2m long N-S, with sides of earth. At its S end is a narrow creepway which leads into a similarly orientated passage, 4m long. The passage decreases in height from 1.3m at its N end to less than .5m at its S end. It averages 1m wide and is roofed with lintels. Its sides are of earth. The above description is derived from A.   Description

  The entrance to the souterrain (KE091-050001-) is centrally located in the raised interior of the enclosure. It measures .6m x .5m and gives access to a lintelled passage, 2m long N-S, with sides of earth. At its S end is a narrow creepway which leads into a similarly orientated passage, 4m long. The passage decreases in height from 1.3m at its N end to less than .5m at its S end. It averages 1m wide and is roofed with lintels. Its sides are of earth. The above description is derived from A.   Description

  This flat section of rock outcrop is situated in rough pasture 34m SW of KE091-027----, and affords a restricted view ofthe Sneem river estuary at S. Its N end is concealed beneath a layer of peat and the exposed decorated surface measures 1.2m x .83m. The motifs comprise three cup-marks, two cup-and-rings, a cup-and-five rings, a cup-and-six gapped rings and some areas of loose pocking. A long groove extending from one of the cup-and-rings runs beneath the peat deposit. The cup-and-five rings carries three satellite cups, and a radial line which commences between the two outermost rings extends beyond the motif. The inner ring of the cup-and-six rings is joined to the second ring by a short loop, and to the fourth by a radial line. One side of the fourth ring terminates in a cup-and-ring (information: A. • KE091-122 Rock art
  Description

  In rough and overgrown ground, just beyond a field fence on the banks of a mountain stream. Partially obscured by bushes, moss and undergrowth. Three rock art sites were recorded in the immediate area: KE091-108---, KE091-109--- and KE091-027--- but all of these have been removed or covered over before more recent surveys during land reclamation work (ie. Alison McQueen and Vera Rahilly 2017).  Rock art described by Ken Williams as; 'Massive earthfast boulder, partially concealed by bushes and undergrowth. Its full dimensions are difficult to establish, but it measures at least 3m x 1.5m and 1.3m high. The size of the boulder and its location on un-reclaimed land suggest it remains in situ and is not one of the three previously recorded rock art sites in the immediate area. The decoration occurs on the top surface and the south-facing sloped side nearest the fence. The decoration also does not match the description any of the three previously recorded sites, none of which are now visible.   The top surface of the boulder is mostly concealed by earth and undergrowth and the visible decoration may extend further than is now apparent. The decoration on the top surface is very weathered and occurs on the southern end of the boulder. It consists of at least 11 cup marks, five of which have evidence of an external ring. Two of the cup marks are unusually large, c.0.12m in diameter, one of these has the best-preserved enclosing ring, while the other has no evidence of having had an enclosing ring. These two large cup marks are separated from the remaining cup marks by a natural fissure in the stone. The decoration on the south-facing sloped edge of the stone consists of three cup marks in a line, two of which have enclosing rings. The leftmost cup and ring has a curved picked line running from the bottom of the ring, while the cup and ring next to it has two curved lines running from the bottom of the ring, all of which are approximately 0.12m in length.  Both the top and sloped edge of the boulder feature dispersed picking and some of the natural vertical linear features running down the sloped edge may have been improved by picking'.  Unrecorded rock art panel identified by Ken Williams.   Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien based on details from Ken Williams.
