• KE003-036 Enclosure
  Description

  Marked on the 1841-42 OS map as a circular enclosure, this site appears on the later edition as a sub- rectangular raised area. Today it consists of a sub- rectangular area enclosed by an earth and stone bank, 3m-11 m wide at the base and up to 1.5m high externally and c .6m high internally. The interior is sloping SE, and contains a scattering of stones. A slight exterior fosse can be noticed for most of the site except to the NE. Elsewhere it is c 1m wide and .4m deep.   Description

  Monakyle burial ground' is marked on the 1841- 42 OS map and on the 1914 map it is designated as 'Monakyle children's burial ground (disused)'. According to Holly (1981), 'The remains of the deceased inmates of the Workhouse in Farranawana were brought up the Pottery Road to be buried here during the famine years and for some time afterwards.' This burial ground was known locally as St Monica's Church, and up to a few years ago there were traces of a building and a graveyard, but no surface trace of either can be seen today. • KE003-038 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Internal diameter 14m N-S, 21m E-W Situated on rising pastureland with excellent views in all directions, this site would appear to be a D-shaped univallate ringfort. Though marked 'Carheen' on the OS maps it would appear to be constructed of earth and stone. The exterior height of the N bank rises to a maximum of 2.2m. Along the S bank, which runs E-W for 26m, there is an internal fosse measuring 1.2m below the bank and 1.2m in width. The S bank measures 3m in width at the base and .8m externally.   Description

  Internal diameter 23m This site is slightly cut on the SW side by a fieldbank running in a NW-SE direction. This circular area is enclosed by a low earthen bank. The bank survives to a height of .8m externally and .5m internally. The width of the bank at the base measures on average 5m. The above description is derived from C.   Description

  According to Denis and Josephine Holly (1981), 'before the road leading to Dooncaha bog was completed many years ago, a small mound of dark coloured, broken and brittle stones could be observed in the lane almost opposite Billy McDonnell's house.'
