• KE098-047002 Stone row
  Description

  This four-stone row is situated in a prominent position on the crest of a ridge running between Lough Currane and Ballinskelligs Bay, and commands extensive views in all directions. The field in which the site is located has recently been reclaimed, and an enclosure incorporates the monument on its NW side. The stone row is aligned ENE-WSW and is 8.6m long. The orthostat at ENE inclines heavily to N, and measures 1.7m x 1.55m x .3m; between it and the second stone is a prostrate slab. The second stone, 1.28m to WSW, stands 1.9m high and measures .85m x .65m at base. Disposed at right angles to its SE face is a slab set on edge which measures .88m high, 1.17m wide and .25m thick. The third stone, .95m to WSW, stands 2.72m high and measures 1.52m x .52m at base. A further .5m to WSW is the fourth stone, which is irregular in elevation, particularly along its NE edge; it stands 2.8m high and its basal dimensions are 2.1m x .32m. Lying against its SE face is a large slab, the function of which is unclear. The remains of an old wall occur between the orthostats and spill downslope to NW. Analysing the significance of the stone row's orientation, Lynch concluded that it was aligned on the setting sun at the winter solstice (1981b, 26). Ó Nualláin, however, expressed doubt about the status of this monument because of its location on the perimeter of the enclosure (1988, 200). It is reputed to mark the burial place of Sceine, the wife of Amergin, the Milesian leader (Barrington 1976, 284). The enclosure, suboval in plan, incorporates the stone row on its NW side. Internally it measures 15.5m NW-SE x 13.8m NE-SW. The bank, which has been greatly denuded since Lynch's description of it (1902b, 331), appears to be composed of earth intermixed with stone. It is 1.3m high externally at W, and its top is almost flush with the interior. Lynch excavated a portion of it and found it to be constructed of stone; he recorded it as four feet (1.2m) wide and three feet (.9m) high (1902b, 331). A 1m wide entrance-like gap occurs at E and is flanked on its N side by a large upright, 1.12m high. A slab set on edge defines its S side. • KE098-048001 Church
  Description

  Templenakilla / Teampall na Cille: This church and burial ground are located in sloping pasture on the SW side of the ridge on which the Eightercua stone row stands (KE098-047002-). The first edition of the OS map depicts the church at the intersection of three field boundaries, two of which enclose a burial ground on its S side. Recent land improvement operations have resulted in the removal of these boundaries and the levelling of the burial area. The rectangular church, of rubble construction, is orientated E-W and measures 9.7m x 4.5m internally. Its walls average .95m thick and survive to a maximum external height of 2.1m at W. They average .7m high, except at S, where only the foundation courses remain. The entrance may have been located here. The interior of the church is filled with rubble and field clearance debris, which obscure the grave-markers noted by Henry within its W half. Henry also recorded ‘extensive but confused foundations of buildings’ surrounding the church (1957, 140). These are no longer apparent. There is now no visible trace of the burial ground (KE098-048002-) which abutted the S side of the church and was used as a place for the interment of children (OSM). It had become disused by the late nineteenth century (OSRNB). Land improvement operations in 1990 revealed a spread of human bone, marine shells and stone close to the SW corner of the church.   Description

  The very dilapidated remains of this small circular enclosure, marked on the first edition of the OS map, are located in elevated pasture overlooking Ballinskelligs Bay and Lough Currane to NW and NE respectively. Only the foundation courses of the enclosing element survive, averaging .5m high and 1.7m wide. Internal and external drystone facing is visible through the grass-cover but it is not clear where the entrance was located. Loose stones are scattered in the interior of the site, which measures 13m N-S x 9m E-W, but no structures are identifiable. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J.   This standing stone is situated on a small rise in marshy land, about 200m from the S shore of Lough Currane. Regular in elevation, it stands 2m high and measures 1m x .62m at base; N-S. • KE098-055 Sheepfold
  Description

  In rough pasture, on a ridge overlooking Lough Currane to the N. The remains of a rectangular structure (4.9m E-W; 4m N-S) defined by the roughly constructed lower courses of a collapsed drystone wall (T 0.7m; H 0.9m). The entrance (Wth 0.55m) is at N. The level interior is obscured by rubble. A low rectangular annexe (1.4m N-S; 1.1m E-W), roofed with stone slabs (H 0.5m), abuts the structure at NE with a lintelled opening in the wall (Wth 0.4m) leading to the structure.   Description

  This circular enclosure, marked on the first edition of the OS map, is located on the crest of a ridge overlooking Ballinskelligs Bay to NW. A collapsed drystone wall encloses a subcircular area measuring 14m N-S x 12.2m E-W. The wall survives .75m high and is 1.3m wide.   Description

  An enclosure and a number of walls are located in an area of level ground, partially covered by blanket peat, between the Finglas river and Lough Currane. Up to twelve stretches of walling occur, mostly extending N-S and averaging 30m long. Some portions are overlain by peat, but elsewhere they stand up to .35m high. They consist of lines of boulders with intermittently spaced upright slabs. The subcircular enclosure (KE098-117----) occurs near the centre of the complex and measures 9.8m E-W x 8.8m N-S internally. Its wall stands to a maximum height of .5m and is faced both externally and internally with horizontally laid slabs which enclose a rubble core. • KE098-129 Kiln - corn-drying
  Description

  No trace is now apparent of the 'irregular mound of stones' recorded by O'Connell at this location on the S side of Lough Currane. It measured 18 feet (5.5m) in diameter and 2 feet (.6m) high, and a spread of stone extended downslope from its N side. There was a lintelled 'chamber', 10 feet (3m) long x 2 feet (.6m) wide x 2 feet (.6m) high, at the centre of the mound. Its sides were constructed of slabs set on edge and one large stone occurred at its 'apsidal' S end. A layer of greasy black earth, 6 inches (.15m) thick, overlay its covering lintels (KAS).
