  Description

  The Holy Stone: Now lying on the road side at the top of Main Street in Dingle Town. This is a large, irregularly-shaped boulder, measuring 3.48m long x from .87 to .75m wide, with 7 large circular or oval cup-marks or basin-like depressions on its upper surface. The 2 smallest depressions are .08 to .12m in diameter and about .02 to .03m deep. The remainder range from .16 to .28m in diameter and from .5 to .13m deep. A channel runs to the edge of the stone from two of the depressions. One of the traditions surrounding the stone connects it with the catholic church which stood in nearby Chapel Lane from 1702 to 1812; the depressions were used for holding holy water (McKenna 1979, 2-3). Rounds were also reputedly made at the stone (OSNB Dingle, book 2, 23). Another tradition is that it once formed part of the complex of standing stones and rock art at Milltown (KE043-213----) (Macalister 1898b, 164).   Description

  In the wall of a house on the W side of Green St. is a plaque (0.42m x 0.42m) featuring a large bird, possibly an eagle, clutching a small bird whilst a 3rd hovers in the background. Architectural fragments described in the Urban Survey of Kerry (Bradley 1987, 65) as follows; Two houses in Green Street have wall plaques which may be of seventeenth century date. (1) The gable of 'Gifts' has two plaques. The upper stone is circular (diam. 22 cm) with an interlaced design of six loops in relief; the lower one is square and has a pair of opposed birds on a perch within a raised border (H. 22 W.22). (2) On a house opposite Gifts' and adjacent to ' Hands Accomodation' is a plaque with a large bird holding a smaller bird in its claw, and a third bird flying above.   Description

  Terraced three-bay three-storey house, built c. 1875, comprising two-bay three-storey elevation facing to north and single-bay three-storey portion facing to north-east. Single-storey canted oriel windows to first floor. Openings remodelled to ground floor to accommodate commercial use in latter part of twentieth century. Pitched artificial slate roof with rendered chimneystacks, cast-iron gutters and downpipes. Painted rendered walls. Hipped slate roofs, curvilinear aprons and one-over-one pane sliding sash windows to oriel windows. Painted stone sills to two-over-two pane sliding sash windows at second floor. Street frontage.

• Leabharlann Dhaingean Uí Chúis [Dingle Carnegie Free Library], library/archive, 1915–1920 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay single-storey Carnegie Free Library, opened 1918, with single-bay single-storey advanced entrance bay to centre having Doric doorcase approached by flight of steps. Three-bay single-storey side elevation to south. Two-bay single-storey return to rear to west. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, raised ridge to return, overhanging eaves on paired brackets and profiled aluminium gutter. Painted rendered walls with raised render quoins. Painted concrete sills and raised and lugged render surrounds to replacement timber windows. Projecting Doric doorcase with full entablature, banded rusticated blocking course with roundel, double-leaf panelled door and limestone steps. Retaining interior features. Rendered walls with concrete copings to street.

• Eaglais Naomh Muire [Saint Mary's Catholic Church], church/chapel, 1860–1870 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding cruciform-plan single- and double-height Roman Catholic church, built 1862-1865, comprising five-bay double-height nave with five-bay single-storey lean-to aisles to north-east and to south-west elevations, single-bay double-height transepts to north-east and to south-west, single-bay single-storey lean-to projecting chapel to south-west, pyramidal roof over crossing, single-bay double-height bowed apse to north-west gable end, entrance bay to south-east gable end and single-bay four-stage engaged corner tower to south on a square plan. Reroofed and remodelled internally in 1963. Pitched copper sheet roofs with rooflight along ridge of nave, pyramidal roof above chancel, slate roof to tower roof and stepped coping. Random red sandstone walls with grey limestone dressings. Paired lancets with limestone ashlar surrounds and hood mouldings. Pointed arch to doorway. Square-headed opening with quatrefoil to tympanum, flanking pilasters and double-leaf boarded doors having decorative strap hinges. Interior largely remodelled in 1963, with plaster stripped off rubble walls and roof profile altered with exposed beams on timber posts. Arches to transepts remain having ashlar voussoirs and columns. Carved stone arcaded reredos with trefoil arches. Limestone steps to front extended in concrete to either side. Graveyard to site with various cut-stone grave markers, c. 1865-present. Gateway, built c. 1880, to south-east comprising limestone ashlar Gothic Revival style piers with wrought-iron cross finials having stone-built quadrant walls with wrought-iron quatrefoil panels.

  Description

  Detached ten-bay three-storey over part-raised basement convent, built c. 1880, originally on a T-shaped plan. Designed by J.J. and C.J. Mc Carthy. Comprising seven-bay three-storey central block and two-bay three-storey gabled advanced end bay to right (possibly originally paired with gable end to left). Four-bay three-storey over raised basement side elevation to south-east. Eleven-bay two-storey return to rear to north-west. Pair of single-bay two-storey flat-roofed projecting bays to north-west elevation. Extended to south-west in 1886, comprising three-bay double-height over raised basement projecting chapel with single-bay full-height over basement lower polygonal apse to south-west gable end. Renovated, c. 1925, with five bays of return remodelled to accommodate use as school. Pitched slate roofs with red sandstone chimneystacks having limestone dressings, cresting to apse of chapel, limestone bellcote and gutter on limestone brackets. Rock-hewn snecked red sandstone walls with smooth grey limestone dressings. Pointed arch openings with limestone surrounds, sandstone relieving arches and timber two-over-two pane sliding sash windows. Replacement uPVC windows to top floor. Tracery to chapel windows. Retaining stained glass windows by Harry Clarke studio. Limestone doorcase to timber double-leaf door flanked by sidelights and approached by flight of limestone steps. Freestanding single-bay single-storey Victorian pavilion block, built c. 1880, to site on a polygonal plan retaining original aspect with series of gablets to circumference. Gateway, built c. 1880, to south-west comprising limestone ashlar Gothic Revival style piers with wrought-iron cross finials having stone-built quadrant walls with wrought-iron quatrefoil panels.
