• KE066-011 Standing stone
  Description

  In pasture, on relatively flat ground, to the N of the Killorglin-Fossa road. A roughly rectangular stone (dims. 1.8m x 1.77m; H 2.45m), with a rounded top, is orientated E-W. This is probably the 'Gallaun' described in the 1930s by Capt. D.B. O'Connell as being close to the road and to the W of the church (St Lelia's RC church).   Description

  This record refers to the present location of a piscina in the E wall of the N transept of St Lelia's Catholic Church (KE066-122----) in Fossa. It was originally in Killalee church (KE066-008----) c. 110m to the W but was moved to its present location in 1921. • KE066-061 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on a steep S-facing slope, on the N shoreline of Lough Leane. The cropmark of two concentric fosses N-E, visible in an aerial photograph (ACAP, V 164/42-3) taken in 1949, may be the remains of a rath. These fosses are not visible at ground level. This is probably one of the two raths (see KE066-089----) recorded in the 1840s in the S side of the townland (OSNB, Aghadoe, no. 1, 21). • KE066-122 Church
  Description

  On the N side of a road, in Fossa village. A cruciform church (long axis E-W) with transepts towards the E end. The church is lit by pointed windows. An entrance porch has been added to the W end of the S wall. There are brick corner buttresses at the W end and a limestone bellcote on top of the W gable. Indicated as a T-shaped structure on the 1846 OS 6-inch map. Lewis (1837, vol. 2, 128) refers to it as a 'chapel of ease' for the parish of Aghadoe. Currently in use as community centre. Inside the church in the E wall of the N transept is a piscina (KE066-021----) which was moved to here from Killalee church (KE066-008----) in 1921. • Saint Lelia's Catholic Church, church/chapel, 1825–1855 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding cruciform-plan double-height Roman Catholic church, built c. 1840, originally barn style single cell. Five-bay nave, renovated and extended, c. 1880, with single-bay double-height transepts added to north and to south elevations, single-bay single-storey sacristy projection added to north-east corner, single-bay single-storey gabled projecting porch added to south-west corner and bellcote inserted to west gable end. Now disused with some openings blocked-up. Pitched slate roof with gable parapets. Roughcast rendered walls with render plinth, projecting eaves course and red brick haunched buttresses to west gable. Pointed arch openings with limestone sills and painted surrounds. Render reveals only to nave windows. Timber "Y" tracery and decorative leaded panels of coloured glass to transept windows. Triple lancet east window with brick reveals. Triple lancet east window. Gateway, built c. 1840, to south comprising four limestone ashlar piers with pyramidal capping having cast-iron gates and railings.

  Description

  Freestanding three-bay single-storey International Modern style Roman Catholic church, opened 1977, on a polygonal plan with polygonal roof and central spire. Designed by Liam McCormick and Partners. Copper cladding to flat sections of roof with copper ridge rolls. Octagonal slate roof surmounted by copper clad spires to main church and chapel with crucifix finials. Slate-hung battered walls. Timber single-pane windows. Aluminium-clad double-leaf door with glass and enamel decorative plaques. Window behind altar in recessed niche containing pond. Octagonal interior with steel exposed trusses and timber boarding to ceiling. Plate glass window behind alter with view to crucifix and landscape beyond. Niches to east wall with carved statues. Steel crucifix in adjoining field separated from church grounds by ha-ha. Octagonal paved forecourt. Contemporary parochial house to south west. Campanile dated 1858.
