  Description

  This site is marked as a circular enclosure on the first edition of the OS map. It was located on the lower W slopes of Bentee mountain, in pastureland. An intersection of field boundaries marks the present location of the site, and a kink in the E-W wall may reflect the NW segment of the original enclosure. A barely discernible section of bank, 8.5m to S, may represent another part of the enclosing element or, perhaps, part of an internal feature. The above description is derived from A. • KE079-063 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  This well-preserved though densely overgrown rath is located in rough pasture on the lower W slopes of Bentee mountain. The site affords an extensive outlook over Valencia Harbour to W and consists of an enclosing fosse and bank and an internal hut. The N side of the rath is defined by a 4.5m high ravine, and the inner face of the bank barely rises above the level of the rath's interior at this point. Elsewhere it rises to an average height of .5m. The bank, composed of earth and gravel with a large content of stone, falls 2.7m to the flat-bottomed fosse. The latter is 1.2m wide and averages 2.4m deep below surrounding ground level. No entrance gap could be identified, though a possible causeway across the fosse occurs at SE. The interior of the rath is level and the wall of the circular hut (KE079-063001-) survives as a band, 1.4m wide, of stone collapse. The internal diameter of the hut is 5.8m.   The interior of the rath is level and the wall of the circular hut (KE079-063001-) survives as a band, 1.4m wide, of stone collapse. The internal diameter of the hut is 5.8m. • KE079-064 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Internal diam. 21m N-S, 22m E-W Located between two field boundaries on the W slopes of Bentee mountain, this circular univallate rath overlooks Valencia Harbour to W. The enclosing bank, composed of earth and stone, is poorly preserved and has virtually disappeared along the N side, where it is truncated by a field boundary. At the downslope W side, the bank has an external height of 1.75m and falls .3m internally. At E it measures .9m high internally and is 2.3m wide. A shallow fosse runs along the inner base of the bank in the E sector, but it is not clear if this is an original feature. Though the bank is gapped in several places, the original entrance to the site appears to be at SE, where a gap measures 2.2m wide. The foundations of a circular hut (KE079-064001-) occupy the interior of the rath. It has an internal diameter of 5m and an opening, .4m wide, at SW.
